I'm looking into what kind of birth control I'm going to ask for when I go to my 6 wk checkup....
I'm EBF (and pumping once every day or two)
Mini-pill birth control is not an option for me. I am absolutely HORRIBLE at remembering to take it every day. I was on Nuvaring before TTC and loved it.
I also don't want an IUD - I'm scared of the extremely rare risk of having a hysterectomy and also will probably be TTC in less than 5 years and don't want to spend a ton of money if we're not going to use it the whole time.
I'm considering these options, but have the following concerns:
Depo-provera shot - Even though it's progestin only, some people still get a drop in milk supply. It lasts 3 months, so if I have a drop in supply I can't "stop taking" it like the pill.
Back on Nuvaring - Problem is that it has estrogen, and will probably drop my supply. Good thing is that I can take it out unlike the shot.
Implant - I've heard it's very expensive.. and I will have to get it removed early if we decide to TTC in less than 3 years. (We're thinking within 2 years)
Does anyone have any feedback on the 3 options that I've looked at? Or any suggestions that don't involve IUD, Pill, Condoms, or pull'n'pray?
I did natural family planning for 1 year after stopping Nuvaring and before TTC... worked great. Problem is, I don't know if it's possible to do while breastfeeding.
Re: Breastfeeding, Birthcontrol, and Periods
I requested birth control 2 weeks pp (had to go in due to high bp after birth) and got the mini pill. I wanted to make sure I was completely covered as soon as DH and I got the go ahead. I had a decrease in milk supply, but the doc was able to call in a script to help get my milk supply up. I am on my second week of birth control and second day of taking the pill to help increase my milk supply and both are going good.
Since mini pill is out for you I would recommend the shot. My doc mentioned the implant, but said he would recommend it since it is still fairly new and there is not a lot of research on if it's effective enought while bf etc. He also informed me that while breastfeeding and on the pill I will not be getting a monthly visitor. Hope this helps!
Just had my 6 week pp visit and the nurse said to wait until baby is about 4-6 months old or eating cereal, since she said all birth control will effect milk supply.
She said just use condoms until then.
I was on the shot in High School for 3 months. I was always in a bad mood and I hated the way it made me feel.
I got the pill with progesteran (sp?) only to take while I am breast feeding and then I got the new pill out there that does not give you a period at all. She wrote me a years prescription for the first one and then a year prescription for the latter.
I just like taking a pill knowing I am doing something. I had a friend have a bad experience with Mirena so I was a little standoffish
