Recommend your insurance (Boring, NBR)

C and I have to pay for private insurance because it is cheaper than getting it through DH's job (long story).  Anyways, I just found out that Regence is hiking up our premiums to $632 a month.  Of course, I've got the only plan that carries maternity.  Does anyone out there buy their own private insurance and likes what they have?  Care to share what company?  I know that prices will vary due to age and such.

  • I can not really help you with this because I am on DH's insurance at work and it sucks. I will say though that I have heard terrific things about Group Health and heard that it is one of the best insurance groups in the country. I do not know if they offer private insurance at all but it may be worth checking into.

  • I've got no suggestions since I'm in Canada, but I just wanted to say that it sucks that you can't just do it through your H's job.  And boo for raising premiums.

  • I pay for private insurance for Gator and I. We have Kaiser. I know some people really hate it and some people love it. I had it years ago through work and hated it. Now I absolutely love it! That being said, I got mine 15 days before they got rid of the plan I had due to losing too much money on it. Mine is 433 a month, 500 deductible, 1,500 out of pocket, no charge for prenatal care, 25 copay for random appointments, 100 towards eyeglasses or contacts, no well baby fees, 80 of prescription cost is paid for, there is no waiting period for getting on the insurance and seeing a doc for maternity coverage....which some insurances have. Now their "cheap" package is 1,000 deductible and 6,000 out of pocket.....at least that's what it was when my friend was looking a year ago. I don't know what the monthly premium is. I was paying 395 for me alone, so it was only 38 more to add Gator onto my plan.

Insurance blows. We pay 200 a month for SO's 1,500 deductible, 7,000 out of pocket plan through Blue Cross.

  • Thanks, LCass. It's a total PITA, you have no idea.  Smit, I've done Group Death before and I didn't mind it.  Also, they do have individual plans.  However, they absolutely refused to send me to a specialist for my Hypothyroid.  After I got other insurance, I've been to an Endocrinologist and I refuse to go backwards.  Elsa, I've never heard of Kaiser.  Too bad they don't offer that same plan.

Maybe I should just move to Canada. :-)
