I think my only direct report is about to get laid off! (NWMR)

I realize that this is *highly* situation dependent, but any tips on how I might save her? We are having a re-org due to shift in our strategic plan (resources need to be aligned with things going forward). The thing is, my employee is really, really necessary! She just doesn't happen to have a very high visibility job, so the assumption is that she isn't doing anything. The decisions are being made at a very senior level, unfortunately, and nobody has asked me or my manager whether she would be helpful going forward. I am just sick about this. I want to advocate for her as best I can, but I also don't want to seem too selfish, since other managers are probably in the same boat.

  • That sucks.  I did go through a similar situation as a result of a merger and my whole department was essentially at risk.  All I can tell you is, you have to be relentless in showing over and over again to whoever is making decisions what value this employee has.  Keep at it and don't take no for an answer.  I made a lot of noise and ultimately it did work, but you have to be persistent and play the politics appropriately.  It's impossible to give very specific advice without knowing your organization, but yes, it can be done.
