Cars and Kids

MH and I are TTC and I need to buy a new car.  Just wondering if anyone has a Honda Accord or similiar and if it's big enough, functional enough with a carseat and gear.  Do you have pros or cons to share about your experience with a sedan versus a cross-over SUV (like a CRV)?

Thanks for taking the time to weigh in.  I appreciate it.

Re: Cars and Kids

  • We drive a VW Jetta with two kids, both in rearfacing car seats. We travel regularly with them, 3-6 hours one way, and the trunk is plenty big enough to fit everything we need for two adults, a toddler, and a baby.

So I personally don't think a larger vehicle is necessary with 1 or 2 kids :) But if you are planning on more kids than that, you maybe want to go bigger than a sedan. We will probably look into a mini van in the future so we have room to haul the kids and their friends as they get older.

  • I have an Accord.  It's the car I had before I had a baby.  The car seat fits fine and I usually keep the diaper bag or other baby stuff on the floor board behind his seat.  The stroller takes up about half the trunk, but it hasn't ever been an issue with me needing to fit much else back there.  It's totally doable, but if you are planning on more than one kid I might consider getting an SUV.  We have looked at them and some of them are roomier and you can add the TV screens for when they are older.  We will probably get one in the next year or so.

  • We have a 2012 Honda Pilot! LOVE it! I've been through several SUV's prior to this car including a 2008 Honda Accord. I can't imagine packing everything in the accord that I do in the pilot. Especially for 2!

We had a Nissan Rogue before the pilot. It's the same size as the CRV. There wasn't enough space. We made it one road trip with LO before we decided it was time to get a bigger vehicle for all the baby stuff!

  • Love my Jetta, would never go to a SUV or even a crossover. I don't like the frame with higher center of gravity for most of them and they are much more prone to rolling over never mind the extra gas milage. My friend's CRV doesn't necessarily hold more in volume in the trunk than my car does. I absolutely can't stand the thought of hybrid SUV's, SUV are designed for off-roading, not drag on a highway. I can fit a large PNP (all the bell's n whistles one) a mattress pad for is that's 26x37", my stroller, suitcase and a carry on size suitcase, plus pillows, blankets, and other things in the trunk. Everything that I need for a weekend away with LO can fit inside the trunk of the jetta. I have a britax carseat.

I used to have a 96 accord and that thing could hold 2x the amount of stuff in the trunk than my jetta.

P.S. why does TTC=new car? it might not be my business but kids are dirty and I wouldn't want to put money into a new car with having kids in the future. LO has puked all over the car more than once. My friend's car in constantly covered in crumbs & spilt water, and that is with cleaning it out once a week.

Are you jetta drivers really short? Dh has a jetta and can't fit a rf seat behind his seat and my knees are in the dash in the passenger's seat with the rf seat behind me. I have an escape and have a little bit of knee room when I sit in the passenger seat with the rf seat behind me, but if I drive, dh's knees are in the dash.

I am 5'4" and DH is easily 6'. We have a 2008 Jetta (slightly roomier than older models, or so I'm told) and have an Evenflo Triumph RFing behind the driver and a Graco SnugRide32 RFing behind the passenger. The driver's seat can go all the way back, but the passenger seat has to be kept forward a bit. I can sit in the passenger seat fine, but DH is just about in the dash. We're a one car family and he does 99% of the driving if we all go somewhere together, so it's not normally an issue for us.

I honestly think it depends on the car seats you have. We have an infant seat with higher height/weight limits, so it takes up more space than our convertible seat. And we specifically chose the Triumph because it fit RFing with the driver's seat all the way back - the Graco MyRide 65 and Britax something we tried didn't fit.

Same here - but I usually keep my diaper bag on the floor of the front passenger seat.  And we can usually keep a lot in the trunk with the stroller.

On weekends we visit my mom we fit DH, me, the baby in a carseat, the dog, a suitcase, the stroller, and a highchair in my 2007 Accord.
