birthing classes

I just looked and all of Valley Medical Centers birthing classes are closed to registration. We are due in Feb and are using a doula who will be doing some childbirth education with us, but we also wanted a different perspective.

Any recommendations for the auburn and surrounding area?  Is it tacky to take a childbirth class at a hospital you won't be delivering at?

Re: birthing classes

  • Try St Francis in Federal Way. I don't think it's tacky, they all give the same info. The only downside I could see is most classes give you a tour of the birthing center and since your deliverying at Valley that would be all you'd miss.

  • We took our class at St Francis also with Becky. It was pretty good. Only about half our class was delivering at St Francis. We took the four week class. It was a little short in my opinion. I would have liked to go into a little more detail. They seemed to be very pro natural birth and teach all of the basics... the technicalities of end of pregnancy and birth, positions, hospital tour, what to expect, etc. I would recommend it.

  • On another note, if you're interested in Tacoma anything taught atThe Birthing Inn is really good. We took Kelly Barr-Lyles(sp?)'s class Life After Baby and it was pretty amazing. They're in Tacoma though so it might be a little far for you in Auburn.

  • I am doing Great Starts even though we are delivering at Swedish.  The schedule and topics covered worked better for DH and me.  I can say it has been fully worth it.

  • I have heard good things about  https://www.bigbellyservices.com/ and Penny Simkin's classes. I just cant fathom the idea of spending 250 dollars on a birth class though.
  • Thanks Ladies!

We ended up signing up at Good Samaritan because it's closer to our house and a 5 week class is only $90.  Even if we don't get a ton out of it, our doula should be able to fill in the gaps. =)

  • Glad you found something!  Just wanted to throw a pitch out for a friend's wife business, but I think it's further North than you wanted. I recommend [and no I don't get any kickbacks, she's just really good!]
