Re: Stripper name?

  • No. It actually sounds a little to old fashioned for my taste.

  • Nope, I think more old lady than stripper. Jade = Stripper, Astrid = old lady. I like old lady names.

  • Not a stripper, but not very feminine-sounding, either.

There is a reason authors sometimes choose odd names for their books... it makes them unusual and unique.  And that doesn't always translate well in the real world, ya know?

  • Only if the strip club is attached to a nursing home.

Astrid is NMS, but I'd don't see stripper in it at all.

  • Definitely not a stripper name. It is a very nice Scandinavian name. The first thing I thought of was Astrid Lindgren, author of the Pippi Longstocking books. If you like it, by all means use it! I have known two or three Astrids (all Germans, actually) and they were nice people.

Yep. Saw the Office episode with it (where Michael misspells it as Astird - aka Ass-turd)

  • If you're referring to White Oleander, GREAT BOOK!

I am so, SO sick of the "The Office" remarks about Astrid. This is a very old name, and The Office is going to be long gone by the time newborn babies would be old enough to watch such a show. Just like Christian shouldn't be ruined by 50 Shades, Astrid shouldn't be ruined by some silly remark on a TV show.

     Stepping off soapbox.

Astrid is beautiful, exotic and offbeat. I totally love it, though I don't think I'd be brave enough to name my daughter Astrid.

  • I don't think of a stripper, although there are lots of names that some people seem to think are "stripperish" that I don't think are at all either.  It's NMS though.
  • I like it. I don't think it is too old lady either.
  • On what planet would Astrid be considered a stripper name? lol I think it's about as far from stripper as you can get.

PS. I like it a little. It falls in with the old-fashioned names trend, which I like. I hate the cutesy names like Mckenna and Tinsley etc.

  • Definitely not a stripper name.  I had a college professor named Astrid (born in Germany).  I've always liked the name.

Exactly! And, the stressed syllable of a girl's name should not be 'Ass'.

ETA: I've never seen the episode where they made fun of this, it's what came to mind automatically for me.

  • I like it for a MN if it has special meaning, but it's NMS so I wouldn't use it as a FN.

  • No, I don't think it sounds like a stripper at all.  I really like it.  It reminds me of a book character too (I'm thinking of White Oleander, what book are thinking of?)

  • It's not a stripper name IMO at all.  Did someone tell you it sounded like one?

That said I DO like the name, but I can understand why some people do not.  It's not a typically American girl sounding name.

What about Aster?  It still has the As- sounding in the beginning I realize, but it's a little softer.

Or maybe you are looking for a Scandinavian name?  What about Ingrid, Sonja, Elin, Kiersten, or Magda?

At least for me...The Office just publicly joked about what I was already thinking. I wouldn't use a name that starts with the sound "Ass". In fact, Astrid is my grandmother's name and she got made fun of a lot as a kid for it, so she's been going my her MN since she was a teenager.

  • Astrid was my husband's favorite girl name, and we nearly named our daughter it. I love the name, but thought it didn't go as well with Rose as a middle name (after my mom). If we have another girl, it'll still be at the top of our list!

  • Astrid was about that last name I was expecting to see in a thread about stripper names.

No it is not a stripper name, but I also hate it. I don't think it's even remotely attractive. And I love most old fashioned names.

  • Wow, Astrid was not the name I was expecting to see here.

I actually like the name, but I think the teasing would be horrific.
