First half marathon recovery

Hi ladies! I just completed my very first half marathon on Saturday.  I can't remember the last time I felt this good about myself! However, I am exhausted. I have zero energy. For those of you who have run long races, how long did it take you to recover? Do you have any tips for me? Thanks ladies!

Re: First half marathon recovery

  • Congrats on your first half! I'd allow yourself a few days to get rid of the exhaustion, and a few days beyond that to feel like running again. But my one tip is if you want to keep running don't take too much time off. I used to always fall off the wagon after a race because I was kind of burned out. Then it was more difficult to get back into the routine and get back into shape. I usually give myself a good 4-5 days and then try to get out for a nice easy jog.

  • Thanks for the advice. It's been weird not running the last few days so I am looking forward to getting back into it.
  • Ditto the PP.  After my first, I took it easy cross training for a month.  This time, I have really kept with it (10k in a week though!), so I took 2 days off maybe.
  • After a marathon, I would cross-train for the week after, no running. Then I would run how ever much I felt the next week and go from there. Now that was pre-pregnancy, so I'm not sure how that may affect you differently. Maybe allow yourself a bit extra rest :)

    Congrats on your half marathon!!!

  • Congrats on the race! I LOVE doing half marathons! (I start training for my next one in Jan)

Usually the rule of thumb is take as many days off to as many miles you ran i.e.- 13 miles raced=13 days rested. That being said, I usually take the I just ran a half marathon excuse not to run for a few days, maybe by the next weekend Id go for a EASY 2-3 miler and start to go back up from there.

    But thats just me ;)
