Crib or Bassinet

Hey ladies,

I currently live with my mom, and will be here for another 4-6 months after the baby is born. Should i buy a crib or a bassinet being that space is soo limited(1 bedroom)?

Re: Crib or Bassinet

  • I struggled with this same question. I decided on crib. We too only have a 1 bedroom so I understand the space being limited. Since the baby will need a crib no matter what we decided on going with that expense. I even got a bassinet for my baby shower and MIL bought the crib so its just a matter of returning the bassinet for something more practical.

  • Well I live with my boyfriend and his family in a trailer so we don't have much room at all! But we did get a bassinet. And if ur only gonna be there for 6 months then I would juss get a bassinet ;)
  • We have a crib but will be starting with a Rock n Play in our room for the first little while

  • Baby may be sitting up by 5-6 months, so a bassinet won't be a wise purchase. Maybe a pack-n-play would be a better option. It's smaller than a crib, and has bassinet features "just in case". You could also use it for trips, etc. whenever needed.

  • I would suggest either a crib or a pack 'n play. A baby will outgrow a bassinet too quickly & then you will need to transition them to somewhere new.

The size difference between a pnp & crib isn't too much but depending on how cramped for space you really are you might end up needing to get a pnp for the little bit of extra space.

    GL with your decision.

I agree with this. We have a pnp with the bassinet, changer and newborn napper. We're keeping that in our room for the baby to sleep in for the first 4 to 5 months. Then she will move to her room where she will sleep in the crib. We're currently using the crib for DS.

With DS, we purchased a bassinet and he hated sleeping in it. So, he would either sleep in the pnp or on one of us. Plus, he was too big for it after a few months.

We also got a rock and play this time because we heard great things about it.

  • We also have one bedroom, We bought a crib because the baby can use it for much longer. Ours turns into a toddler bed which I think will go alot longer, you will most likely end up buying one in the end. Plus then I dont have to worry about switching to the crib later on.

  • There are some cribs that are a lot smaller, that are meant for smaller spaces. Can't think of any brands off the top of my head, but if you google it, I'm sure it'll come up with something.

I agree with pps; don't get a bassinet. Your baby may grow out of it even before 5 or 6 months.

  • I feel like I'm the ikea promoter here but their cribs are total space savers! We have 2 bedrooms but BF needs a separate room to record music so we decided to keep the studio and put the crib in our bedroom. It's a small bedroom but it is not at all cramped. I need to figure out how to do a panorama pic to show the layout. But basically, it's bed against one wall, crib is right beside it on the other wall.

Anyway, ikea crib was 60 dollars, space saving while still full sized, and converts to a toddler bed.

  • DH and i live with his parents, so we're pretty limited on space. luckily, we converted the bonus room to a bedroom/nursery so have a little bit more space. we decided to go with the crib, but in your situation you could opt for a mini crib or a pack n play. my friend had her baby sleep in the pack n play because she was in an apartment, and her baby slept just fine :)

  • I agree a bassinet isn't practical for long enough. I'd go with a thin crib or PNP, you don't need a PNP with all the attachments, they're a pita to store too. I would think Walmart (I just browsed and walmart also has convertibles that aren't super bulky) or Ikea for thin/small cribs. I have a convertible from BRU and it's huge and cumbersome (but fine for us since we don't have to move it.)

  • If you can fit a crib I would just go ahead and get it. Try to get something more basic so it takes up as little space as possible. Depending on the size of the bassinet, baby can outgrow it within a few months.

  • Well i would get a pack n play then, the one i just ordered on Walmart.com was only 99 dollars and it has a bassinet in it and a changing table, and it vibrates and you can put music on it. • We put the crib in our bedroom because our other bedroom is much farther away than we want.  We heard that crib is safer than other options but we also had a pack n play which we're thinking to put in the family room where we will not leave him unattended like sleeping.

  • I would do a crib or a pack n play. My DD grew out of the bassinet pretty quickly and then we put our pack n play in our room until we were ready for her to start sleeping in crib in her own room.
