GOOD day in the new NICU

I breast fed for the first time today! It was awesome and LO did SO well! We had to use a shield because i was so full but it went really well.  LO latched right away and did better than she does with the bottle IMO.  The only bummer is that the nurse warmed a full feeding in case we didn't have success and had to go to the bottle....well DD did so great and then only took 10 mls from the bottle after so the rest had to be tossed because it was warmed. Again, negligent on the part of the nurse (she should have waited to see how the BFing went IMO) but I pumped a lot more than usual after feeding so that made up for it I guess...still upsetting to see my milk in the garbage :( but overall a good day! I can now BF any feeding I'm there and as long as she's gaining 20-30 grams a day I can continue. So happy about that!

I'm so glad you had a good day!  Try to take it a little easy on the nurses in this instance - the first time I tried nursing for real, they did the same thing for us because they weren't sure how she'd do (and she ended up taking at least half of the bottle anyway, so it was kind of good that they had that much in there).  Next time you try nursing, see how much they put in, and you can always ask them to have about half of her normal amount in the bottle so they don't waste as much if she doesn't need it all.  Still, I know how upsetting it is to see that much milk go to waste.  Good luck with the BFing - I hope that she continues to do so well!

So glad you had a good day!  How are you liking the new hospital...when did you transfer?

I agree with Boston about the nurses in this case, they did the same for me when I was trying to BF, and usually DS wouldn't do very well so both of us were happy to have a bottle at the ready.  I would definitely request that they warm up less next time since your DD did so well this time...I always cringed anytime I had to dump milk too because of all the work it took to get it!

Good luck going forward, and hope she continues to do well on BF feeds!

  • Congratulations! They did the same for us. The next time they heated less and he barely ate from me. Go figure!

  • Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear that it just seems to be what they do the first time BFing is tried. I will definitely ask for less to be warmed tomorrow though.

  • They did the same the first time I bf. Instead of them warming any bm when I bf we myself, DD Dr, and her nurses agreed we would use the bottles of calorie formula after bfing. That was due to not only my bm being fortified, but also the fact that my production was so low she was getting formula half the time anyway. Idk if that is an option you feel is acceptable for you your lo. Definitely talk to them though they should be able to tell you what they can do to keep from wasting bm.

  • I'm glad that you had a great day! I remember treasuring the good days so that I could focus on those whenever we had the not-so-good days.  I'm sorry that you had to see of your BM in the trash, but I'm happy to hear that you were able to pump more than usual.  GL with BF!
