where to buy leotards and tights?

DD is starting a ballet and tap class and I'm looking for a leotard (probably size 2T) and dance tights.  Any recommendations?

Also I hear payless sells ballet shoes now.  Are they okay quality at this age?

Re: where to buy leotards and tights?

  • I did go to a local dance store but it was $60 for all of it (shoes, leotard, tights & little skirt thingee).

I think you can probably get a lot of things at Target in terms of tights & leotards (not sure about the leos), just make sure the school doesnt have specific requirements for colors or whatnot. They probably want leather soled ballet shoes so I'd make sure payless ones have that. Honestly the shoes (I got some capezio ones that are made to 'grow' with them, they have 2 sizing settings) were the cheapest part of the whole bit I think. $16 or something.

  • I bought DD1's ballet leotard at Kohls, but they do have them at Target. I bought the dance tights at Target and then found out that the plain tights they sell are exactly the same but $3 less. We've done the ballet shoes at Payless and just the ballet slippers from Target. I don't think at this age it makes much of a difference.

  • Walmart for leotard and tights (they sell danskin brand) and her dance studio for slippers--they actually have the best price and they do the fitting

  • Also check local consignment shops. I've found some really cute leotards at mine.
