How much would you pay for wall letters?

I finished the wall letters for Jacob's nursery. SO says I should try to sell them online/to friends having babies/craft fairs. They go for a range of prices on Etsy so I'm just wondering how much you would pay per letter. (These are paper mache, not wood because there was no A for the wooden letters I liked at Joann's.) These are obviously made to go with a jungle theme but if they matched your nursery how much would you spend on them? Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic.

Re: How much would you pay for wall letters?

  • Hmm . . those are pretty darn cute and much cuter than anything I could do. I'm kind of a cheap but though and probably wouldn't want to pay over $3/4 or more per letter. Only because if I have a child with a longer name like Madison . . that could add up.

I do think you did a very nice job and could probably sell online.

  • Those are really nice.  I think I would go up to $5.00 per letter if I really liked what I saw.

PS: Let me know if you do end up starting a business ;)

I'm cheap too, that's why I made my own. I probably will just make them for friends as they start families but painting is so relaxing to me.

Just a thought that you might consider selling via the Swap Shop pages on Facebook. That way you could avoid selling fees from Etsy and PayPal and then just do business locally. You could take orders that way. It would help pay for a hobby that you like maybe. I'm sure family and friends would also enjoy having the items made for them as gifts, etc.

ETA - Then maybe once you have really built a portfolio of work you could sell on Etsy because you would probably have lots of designs, colors, etc.

  • Those obviously required a lot of your time with the amount of detail you put into them.  I think around $10-$12 per letter is a range I would pay, but I also find it really hard to pay for stuff like that because I'm crafty too and I usually feel like I'd rather put my time in and make it myself.

How much did it cost you in supplies for each letter and how much time did you put into each letter?  How much do you want to be paid per hour?  I think you should pay yourself around $10/hour at least.

  • Those are really cute! I would be comfy paying $3-$5 per letter, but as PP said, that can be pricey if a child's name is long. Perhaps there could be a price cut if you order more than X number of letters.
  • FWIW- I just ordered baby wood blocks that are painted and will have one block for each of letter of Kendall's name.... these things are pretty small and I am paying $2.75/each.

  • How much did your materials cost?

I would be willing to pay $10/letter for up to 5 letters and then discount from there. Maybe $10/letter for the first 5 letters and then $5.00-7.50 for additional letters?

I plan to do wall letters in our nursery too and have been pricing them out. The wooden ones are expensive and it's going to cost me about $45-$70 just for the letters alone--not including paint or other supplies...

  • We just bought our letters today (12 inches high, wood, small polka dots). They were 60 cents each, on clearance at Buy Buy Baby. I would have paid up to a dollar each. Decorative letters just aren't that important to me, but yours are very pretty!

This. I was thinking I could go up to $10 for my own name (would be $40 total) but would hesitate on my LO's name ($80 total). I think a discount over 5 letters would make it more palatable for those that might hesitate due to a longer name.

  • I paid $3.99 for plain wood letters that I had to paint myself.. so for those I'd pay about $8-$10 per letter

  • Ok I'm gonna say I am not crafty at all and at the time there's no way I would of had time to do them.  I payed $ 20.00 per letter, i think it was crazy expensive but at time I didn't care!  They're beautiful and I am happy with the results.  My nursery theme was an animal theme based on a PBK crib sheets that I purchased, she painted/ drew three animals on the letters lion, Jiraffe and owl I think!

  • Those are seriously cute! I'd pay $5-10, or a start price of $25 and then more per letter for anything over 5 letters.

  • Since my DD's name (Caroline) is long, I wouldn't pay more than $5/letter. If I was using something short like Mia, I'd pay more. I'm not crafty in the slightest.

You could probably charge more since you handpainted these...a lot of the ones I see are just covered in printed paper and sprayed with a sealent.  You could charge by name maybe?  Like $20 to start for up to 4-5 letters and then an additional $3-5/letter after that.

    That's a good idea.

  • I am looking for letter for my LO's name, and my goal is to keep it under $40(preferably $30).  Her name has 6 letters.  So I agree with the pp who suggested having a base price for say 5 letters, and then $3-$5 per additional letter.

I wouldn't pay more than $5 but that's because I also enjoy crafts and I find them relaxing but people pay much more than you would ever think. I'd say you could easily get $10 a letter. Look at craftcuts.com for price ideas.

For a frame of reference, the mobile I liked on Etsy was $100 but I recreated it for about $20 but the seller had sold tons of them and wasn't the only seller with mobiles in that range.

This exactly. I'm currently making letters for our little girl, although I'm wrapping the letters in yarn and adding flowers and pearls. If I weren't crafty, I'd probably pay $6-7 per letter.
