When I got my 4th BFP last week, I called my best friend's OB because my GYN recently dropped the OB part...my best friend's doctor was the only one I had ever met in person and knew I liked her. Anyway, I called and spoke with a nurse to make my first and second appointments and after hanging up the phone, I realized that she didn't even tell me to go out and get on a prenatal, or anything! We made my first appointment for when I'll be 8.5 weeks and she didn't bother telling me to eat healthy, get on a vitamin or anything of that nature - simply "congrats and we'll see you in a month"...I've been taking a prenatal for a while, so it was a non-issue, but was this just her being careless or do most doctor's offices not even talk about prenatals until the first appointment?!
Re: Random afterthought - What do you think?
I'm sure if you had asked, she would've told you. Maybe she just generally doesn't go into these detailed discussions over the phone.
There are sooooo many books, websites, and other resources out there, and obviously you already know a little something. If you really want the care provider to feed you all the information, maybe you should look for a midwife.
This is so wild to me because there are women out there (most likely) that don't know to get started on a vitamin right away LOL. I can't believe that wouldn't be part of the package when calling for a first appointment. In theory, some women would not be on a PNV for the first 8-10 weeks of pregnancy because they weren't informed! I know, that's on the woman, but still! Thanks for feedback, Ladies. Just interesting!
Anxiously awaiting baby #1! Baby BOY Due: May 30, 2013!
I've been thinking about this lately too! My DR (well the receptionist anyway) didn't mention a prenatal to me either - and I've been wondering if it was because they assume I know to take one, or its noted in my chart that I already had been on one?
I also wonder why the what-to-expect type book my friend passed on to me doesn't mention listeria until 50 pages in...and then includes a caveat about not panicking if you've been eating salami every meal, every day until you read that page. Does not make sense to me.
I guess I just think that not every woman has the access to resources and information like we all obviously do.
