I'm back... AND I need some advice (sort of long)

Our transition to WCM has been going terribly.  One of many reasons I've been MIA... along with E just getting over having Roseola over the last week.

She drinks WCM just fine at DC.  At home, regardless of whether it's me or DH giving it to her, she pushes it away.  I've tried 6 different brands of WCM, both organic and not.  I've spent $60 on different brands of sippy cups.... both straw and not.  I'm at my wits end!  I even bought the milk and same cups that DC uses.

I've tried mixing BM and WCM - doesn't work.  She won't even drink BM from a sippy or bottle anymore - has to be directly from the source.  I <3 BF but she's over 1 and I'm pretty much done and want to wean but I'm scared that she will have NO intake of BM or WCM if I try weaning before I get her on board with the WCM

She is already small and real low on the chart for weight and I literally lay awake at night trying to think of things to try and ways to encourage this.  She lost some weight from having the roseola and not wanting to eat/drink for almost a week.

I would appreciate any tips, tricks or advice because I'm at a loss here.

  • Aw Casey, I got gooseies when I read you lay awake at night thinking how you can improve her milk intake and weight gain. Be proud...you are a good mama.

Have you spoken to your Pedi about this? Or even a LC? It sounds like you have exhausted variety in options to offer WCM... How much is she getting at DC? maybe it is her body naturally rejecting the WCM at home because she has maxed her daily nutrient requirements?

What about on the weekends? or days she is not at DC.. will she take WCM from a regular cup and share a glass of milk with you?

I am planning on talking to the pedi if this keeps up.  I thought we had a breakthrough last night when she took 1.5 oz of WCM from the new sippy but this morning she was rejecting it and crying to nurse.  On DC days she'll take about 8 oz and then not want more when she gets home.

On days she's home I'm lucky if I get 1-2 oz. in her.  I have tried a regular cup too.  It's just so odd how irratic this is - one day she'll like one cup and hate it the next.

Weaning from BF isn't working.  I'm wondering if the cold turkey option should be put on the table.

If I were you I would call your Pedi even if it does not keep up (which it sounds like it will), I mean, they see a lot of kiddos and could offer more insight and discuss what your baby girl needs specifically.

If you are thinking the cold turkey way... then talk to a LC. I know I always feel better about decisions when I have tried to get as much info as possible before I make the decision.

I am sure she is getting all that she needs.. Yesterday, another mom told me how "tiny" Bo was.... Okay, lady, I get it he is not a huge tank.. but look at my H and I were itty bitty our entire childhood and young adulthood.. some babies and people are just small.

  • I'm sorry you guys are having such a tough time of it. It's so hard being a mom sometimes.

G loves drinking out of my cup with a straw. (usually a double walled tumbler with a lid) Maybe you could try something like that until she gets more use to WCM? The lid on the tumbler helps keep the spills to a minimum and the regular straw is easier to get liquid out of.

I really hope she changes her opinion of wcm soon!

Thanks for the advice. I know I need to at least talk to the pedi to figure this out.

I can't believe some people.  Bo is not "tiny."  Apparently it's bad news if your baby isn't super chunky. I get the same things said to me about E.  Yes, I realize she is on the smaller side but the pedi isn't concerned at all.  She's just small.  They need some babies to fill up the bottom of the growth chart ya know.

  • How much does she weigh? DD2 was less than 18lbs at her 12 month check up and the doctor wants to see her put on weight. She recommended 20oz of WCM, but we're not getting close to that - maybe 10-12oz, and thats with a baby who loves her sippy and her milk! So we've decided to let her drink whatever milk she wants, then get healthier fats into her others ways. Whole milk yogurt, avacado, and peanut butter will add fats to her diet. We also cook with olive oil a lot, and I don't hesitate to add a little butter to toast or veggies once in a while.

I can't give any advice on how to get her to drink the milk other than just give it time, but just wanted to offer up other suggestions on helping get her weight up. And honestly, as long as she's healthy and developing on track, her weight may not be an issue. Like beca said - some people are just small!

  • Some kids just don't like milk, and they are fine.

You should talk to your pedi, and maybe try something different to get the nutrients she needs like vitamins, and try milk again later.

  • You are not alone! DD refuses anything but water out of sippy- not milk, juice nada. Our pedi recommended flavoring the milk to get her used to it then slowly weaning off the flavor. A couple friends and her ENT also mentioned this so I decided to go for it. Her pedi had mentioned ovaltine but DD has a dairy allergy so we were limited in our flavoring choices. I found sugar free hershey's syrup that is both dairy and sugar free- win! I added it to her almond milk last night and sure enough she drank some of it. Not a ton but she at least took it and went back for a few sips two or three times- more then she has ever done before!

We are lucky that she takes the unflavored almond milk from a bottle so we still do that 3 times a day for the nutrition and calories (picky eater and only 18lbs 3oz) but I was starting to lose hope on the sippy cup transition. Now I think we might actually start making progress!!!

  • Halle's growth curve was non-existent so we had to get her drinking pediasure which she outright refused.  We ended up mixing it with orange juice initially to get her interested.  She is now down to just a splash of orange juice and drinks it no problem.  Not ideal, but if you need them to be drinking, it worked over here.
