Babies: 9 - 12 Months

how to ween LO when you're a human pacifier?

my LOs still don't sttn some nights their up several times and the only way to get them to stop crying is to nurse them back to sleep but they freak out if I take my boob out even if they are sleeping. they seem to just want to suck & comfort, I doubt their hungry that often at night. I usually lay them down with me since Im half awake and sometimes we both fall asleep but if I dont fall asleep its hard to have LOs let go unless their in a deep sleep. They weaned themselves off of pacifiers after a few months early on and I have tried to remove the boob and stick a paci in but they just won't have it. I need help! what should I do??

Re: how to ween LO when you're a human pacifier?

  • oh wow, I am in the exact same situation.

my son never took a paci, he did suck his thumb, which was great, but then he just stopped at six months.

Now I am up 2-3 times a night having to nurse him back to sleep. I know it's not hunger. At five months, he was sleeping 10 hours in a row, but that only lasted about three weeks.

I am exhausted and we don't/won't CIO. I have tried the "pantly pull off" as outlined in the no cry sleep sloultion book, it was working for awhile at betime, but not in the middle of the night. If my husband tries to soothe him, he screams.

I wish I could offer some help! Just know you are are not alone!

  • so not alone.

take comfort knowing that it will end (my first son was like this too) ... and then you will be sad when it's over.

  • My DD was doing this around 7 months and I couldn't take it anymore so we did the plan in the Sleep Easy Solutions book.  I stopped nursing her at night and only fed her a bottle.  Then we dropped about an ounce a week until she was down to 2 ounces and then let her fuss herself to sleep.  Doing this method made me confident that it wasn't hunger and was only sucking.  I don't know if this is considered CIO but the book explains how they really do need to teach themselves to fall asleep and its not going to happen without crying when they have been getting the boob for so long and then it changes.  It took her 3 nights of waking and fussing to stop waking up at night.  Its hard to listen to her fuss but I felt like her getting consistent sleep through the night was important and we are both happy now.  Just a side note-  The book also helped me realize that she should be sleeping at least 10.5 hours before getting fed, otherwise she will think she is being fed "in the middle of the night".  This was a problem for us, as she would sleep about 8 hours and I would think that was good, but then her night wakings would creep earlier and earlier. HTH!
  • thanks, I ordered the no cry sleep book Im hoping it arrives soon so we can try some sleep training and thats cool theres a method in there to help with this issue too! I was up from 4am til 7 with them taking turns nursing/sucking back to sleep as soon as I put one in bed the other was up and it kept going on and on... :(
