Fav chapter books

I bought a pack of Roals Dahl books, DS only let me read approx two pages of Jamea and the Giant Peach before he was done, dead parents and mean Aunt did not make for a pleasant read with a 5yo sensitive kid. We are now reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and he is loving it. I will probably read The Glass Elevator next but need suggestions after that. He is not into typically "boy" subjects and does not like scary or mean which makes it hard. Feel free to suggest books your DS, DD or you like.

Flat Stanley (although I know our 2nd grade teachers read these books and do a project)

    The Borrowers

    Matilda

  • Both my stepson and stepdaughter enjoyed the Laura Ingalls Wilder books.  Enough hunting, farming, tree chopping etc. to keep boys engaged I think, plus they make for great conversation!

  • DD1 really enjoys the Magic Treehouse series. We are now on book 12.

  • DS loves

    Flat Stanley Series
Magic tree house series we are on book 19 now
    Charlotte Webb
    The adventure of Ralph Mouse
Maybelle in the soup very short chapters , but a cute story
Junie B Jones series I'm not really a fan, but DS loves this series, it was introduce to him by his k teacher
Toys go out and Toys dance party DS love those two as well.
  • Yup, PP mentioned Ralph S. Mouse (The mouse and the motorcycle, ralph s. mouse, I think there's a third one but I'm not sure). I'm giving it to my daughter this week (my old copy that *I* read in grade school!), I used to read it over and over again. She also likes the Junie B. books, but I haven't read much of it, I don't know how boy-ish it is...

there was a series that was popular a while ago, I cannot remember the name of it, where the kids could morph into animals... It may be too old for a 5-yr old, though.

    OMG too many tickers...

  • I have a similarly sensitive boy.  He has enjoyed:

The Search For Delicious, by Natalie Babbitt

Charlotte's Web (but know your kid before you proceed -- my son loved this book, but he cried at the end!)

Toys Go Out and Toys Dance Party, by Emily Jenkins

    Gooseberry Park, by Cynthia Rylant

The Twits, by Roald Dahl (it's more obviously silly than James and the GP)

    The Little Prince

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats Of N.I.M.H. (perhaps a little scary... maybe work your way up to it)

    Socks, by Beverly Cleary

Bad Kitty Takes A Bath, Happy Birthday Bad Kitty (this is a little sarcastic and goofy, but my son LOVES these)

    How To Train Your Dragon

Ooh -- ditto! I forgot these!  Don't assume that these are too "girly" for a boy.  Both my kids found them very interesting.

  • Magic Treehouse

    Flat Stanley

Kids from the Polk Street School series

Sideways Stories from Wayside School is one of DD's favorites.

Cam Jansen books are good if he likes to "figure it out" (kind of like mysteries).

If he likes sports, then the Matt Christopher books are great.

She's read a number of Dahl books and she has all the Hiaasen books, but they're still a little too old.

  • I forgot the Encyclopedia Brown series! DD read those with DH when she was 5 and LOVED them. You get the solve the mystery at the end. They were a fave of DH when he was younger as well. :)
