I miss my wine!

Don't get me wrong, I gladly gave up drinking alcohol when I found out I was pregnant and it is completely worth it, but...........I miss my wine! I used to have a glass of red wine nearly every night & I haven't had any in over 6 months & it'll be a while because I plan to breast feed. Anyone else missing their drink a little?

  • I miss pumpkin beer... so much.
  • Yes. After an especially trying day or with a nice dinner I could really go for a glass of white zin... It's totally worth it to go with out but it would still be nice to have every now and then!

  • I'm seriously contemplating a half glass tonight. It's been a day....
  • Yep, I miss wine too! But while breast feeding, it's ok to have a drink here and there...so after the baby is born you can have a glass of wine!

  • I miss beer when I'm watching football games.  I miss wine when I'm eating Italian.  I miss rum every second of every day.

I'll get it soon enough though.

  • Yup i had a glass every night and am deffinitely missing it! like you said, glad to give it up for baby but still....I would allow myself a half a glass of wine after the first night time feeding with my other two kids when they were babies, so im looking forward to that first half glass in 3months from now!!!

  • Yikes, am I the only one still drinking wine? I had half a glass last night and a full glass a couple weeks ago - stressed after registering LOL.  Not that I'm drinking frequently but I've had maybe 2 glasses a month since second Tri.
  • It has been a long hot summer without a glass of white wine or an IPA. Now with the fall ales and winter stouts coming out... my little one better be perfect.
  • I definitely miss some hard cider. Especially from a local cider house here which has all kinds of awesome flavors. I'm not looking forward to missing it over the holidays either. :(

  • I can ABSOLUTELY relate. I am a huge wine lover and it's such a big part of our life (not in an alcoholic kind of way but in a we like to sample different wines and go on tastings kind of way Big Smile).

I will miss this years annual tasting we do on the NY finger lakes around the holiday season. It is so much fun and am sad to not be going. However we waited so long for this baby so that keeps me happy.

I too also miss pumpkin beer. Love that this time of year!

I had a single glass in celebration at dinner after our anatomy scan and finding out LO is a boy! DH and I actually got into an argument about it. I won't go into great detail about that. He meant well. I have read a lot of research on the topic and feel very comfortable with my decision. There will never be a definitive study proving that a little bit beer or wine is completely okay. However, IMO the evidence does suggest that a single glass is okay for ME. I'll have another in December for our anniversary.

Also, things are very different other cultures, if that gives you any perspective on the topic.

  • I miss it too!  But I didn't let Breastfeeding stop me with DD!   By the time DD was a few months old I knew when I could plan to have a little glass of wine.  we gave DD a dreamfeed which usually was pumped milk from the night before and then once she was soundly in bed asleep I would pump and have a glass of wine at the same time:)  I knew that DD wouldn't be waking for 6-8 hours for her next feed and the wine certainly wouldn't be making it into my breastmilk while I was pumping so it was all good!

Nope. I still drink wine. Probably a couple of glasses a week. Really not a big deal.

  • Me! I've never been a super heavy drinker or anything but I often had a glass of wine with DH after we put DS to bed. Right now what I'd love is a glass of 14 Hands Red Blend. It's cheap and YUMMY!

Also, when you're breastfeeding once your LO isn't nursing quite as often you can have a small glass if you time it right! (With DS I would have DH pour a glass when nursing and drink it right after he finished nursing so it'd have time to be out of my system before the next feeding) So you can look forward to that! Plus, you'll be a TOTAL lightweight so a tiny glass will have the same effect as a larger one would have in the past.

  • I've had a few glasses since the 2nd tri started! No regrets and enjoyed them :) I am 100% comfortable that the occasional glass after 2nd tri is completely safe.

You can drink while BF too, just don't get totally wasted. Very little of the wine transfers to the milk.

  • I miss it, too!  We were supposed to be in Napa/Sonoma a couple of weeks ago but canceled due to my pregnancy.  I'm not going to wine country without being able to drink.  I also miss a glass of white wine while cooking dinner... or out to dinner... or anytime, really.

  • Me too.....

My doctor said my husband and I can share a glass of red wine occasionally. I have yet to do this. I do know there are alcohol testing strips you can buy that you place in the container of your breast milk and it will indicate whether or not there is alcohol present. I plan on buying these and having a glass of wine once I've pumped enough to have a decent back up supply.

I've heard there's non alcoholic wine as well but have no clue where to find it and even then I'm leary about the taste.

  • I miss drinking period. I don't know what it is this time. I am actually jealous of people that are drinking. I was never like this with my last pregnancy. I can't wait to have a glass of wine! And a dirty martini!!

Not the only one. I've had some, and did with my first as well. My OB ok'd it. It's not a big deal.

Also, OP, you can drink while BFing. Just have your glass an hour before feeding.

  • I have had one glass of wine this pregnancy and I plan on having more wine over the holidays. My OB told me it's okay.  I drank a glass of wine several nights a week while breastfeeding DD.  My lactaction consultant told me to drink beer as well to get my milk supply up. I am not a beer fan, so I didn't do that, but I have had several friends who have.

I agree with  pp, last pregnancy I did not miss drinking at all.....this pregnancy in the summer months I craved a margarita badly and now I am craving wine after a bad day.  I might start drinking one glass a week (which my OB told me was fine).

Actually the best time to avoid passing alcohol through would be to drink WHILE BFing! As someone said once in my BFing group, there isnt a direct spigot from your mouth to your nipple :) It takes some time to work it's way through anyhow.

I definitely had wine here and there while BFing and never noticed any effect whatsoever on my son. If you are getting DRUNK yes, I woudl pump n dump but for a couple glasses or whatever you really are OK :)
