FAQ Pulled Pork Slow Cooker

Hello! I know this gets asked a lot and I tried scrolling through pages but couldn't find the post I was looking for. Can I used a rolled pork roast instead of a pork shoulder for pulled pork in the slow cooker? Also, I think everyone raves about a recipe with root beer. Is it just a 12oz can poured over the roast, cooked on low 6 8 hrs on low, drained and then sauce added? Or can you share your favorite recipe? Making it for company so I don't want to experiment like I would if it was just DH. Thanks!

Re: FAQ Pulled Pork Slow Cooker

  • I've only ever used a pork tenderloin.  I usually do about 2 pounds because DH will eat leftovers for a week, lol!  I've played with several root beer/BBQ sauce combinations, the best I've come up with is almost a full 2 liter of Barq's root beer (enough to cover the meat), cook on low for 6 hours, shred the meat and cook for 30 more minutes, drain the juice, then pour in Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce (one large container or 2 small ones) and cook on low for 30 minutes (or you can let it simmer for hours if you have the time...) Then I serve with Potato hamburger buns, pepperjack cheese, and DH likes mayo on his bun, but I don't do that.

I don't know the answer to your first question, but I do have a favorite recipe.  You pour a jar of salsa (any favorite jarred salsa) over the pork shoulder, add a variety of spices (really whatever sounds good, but remember that your salsa is already spiced - I think I usually use oregano, cocoa, paprika and cumin, a tablespoonish of each), and cook it on low for 8 hours.  So delicious!

Oooh I do this with chicken breasts and use the Safeway "southwest salsa" that has rice and beans in it...soooo good!

  • The rolled pork roast will work. Here's the recipe I use - https://allrecipes.com/recipe/sarges-ez-pulled-pork-bbq/
  • I also use pork tendeloin. I pour almost a litre over 2 tenderloins. I add some ginger and s&p. I only cook mine for about 5 hours. I take it out and sit them in a colinder to drain excess liquid. Then I shred with 2 forks, add 1 cup brown sugar bbq sauce and 1/2 c sweet chili sauce. So good!

  • I've only used a tenderloin, but I bet any cut would work.  I actually was not as impressed with the root beer as I was hoping.  I think it was just too sweet, but I think if I would've used more of a "sassy" bbq sauce, that might haven given it a little tangy flavor.  I've also cooked a tenderloin in beef broth and onion soup for a meal with mashed potatoes and then later taken the leftovers and slow cooked it with bbq for a great tasty pulled pork!  Two meals in one!
