Pregnant but have a 8.5 month old- WWYD?

Hi ladies,

I'm about a month pregnant, and my baby is 8.5 months old (yes, I wanted this to happen :-)). Anyway, my supply has TANKED. Like, I pump a nightly bottle for her and used to get 7 oz, I went down to 2 oz, last night I got 0.25 oz and tonight I got a couple drops. At this rate my freezer stash will be gone in no time. I can also tell when she's nursing that she's not getting much because of the way she's sucking (not much swallowing, short nursing sessions). I wanted to EBF up to one year and I'm worried. I have a dr's appointment in a week and a half, but has anybody else been in this situation? What did you do? I have a whole bunch of formula samples that I didn't use and thought maybe I should offer and see if she wants it. Help!!!

  • I needed to supplement but we also bf until a year, my middle was nine months when I got pregnant with my third. He nursed when we were together but got a bottle in the evening. I found I had to drink SO much water and up my calories to keep my supply up. Good luck and congrats!

  • Thanks bellelamb.... it's good to know I'm not the only one who has been through this. I know I should be drinking more water, I drink quite a bit but find that it makes my stomach all floaty feeling... I drank a couple glasses tonight and I just threw up my dinner :-(. So much for extra calories :S. I am wondering if I should just use all of my frozen breast milk as her last bottle until it is gone and then see if she'll take formula for that last bottle. Or maybe I should offer some formula after a daytime breastfeeding session to see if she still needs milk. I am so confused!

  • Is she acting fussy of hungry?? Is she eating any food at this point? If she's happy I wouldn't stress too much. I had already introduced formula because I couldn't keep up with pumping when I worked so it wasn't a big deal for us. You'll figure out what works for you.

  • At only 8.5 months BM (or formula) still needs to be a pretty large portion of her calories.  I would keep nursing her as much as you can, but if you are giving bottles and can't pump to replace them, I think you will have to go to formula.  But that doesn't mean you can't keep nursing in addition to that of course!
  • I was going to ask this question. I think I took my supply for granted and went down to one session pumping down to ten ounces from fifteen twenty. I hadn't realized how quickly the freezer stash went down so we're trying formula to supplement. We're down to twelve four ounce bags :

I'm six weeks along and Bear is almost eleven months. I hope I can make it to a year with him.

So more water and more calories? I hope it helps!

  • Thanks everyone for your input. She's not fussy, which is good... I am going to use up my freezer stash then and then start offering formula only at night (breastfeed the rest). Okay, I feel better.
