Progesterone supplements - What to expect?

My OB office just called and had my progesterone results. The nurse said my levels were fine and asked if Dr. had put me on supplements at my appt. He had not so she went to double check with him. And he does want me to start supplements because I am on the low side of normal.

I have never had my progesterone levels check in my 3 previous pregnancies, but had a miscarriage earlier this year. I think that is why he test me this time.

Can anyone share what I could expect?

Re: Progesterone supplements - What to expect?

  • There are different types of supplements, and I'm on an oral once-a-day. I can't remember the name of it right now, I just know it makes me VERY sleepy and dopey about 20 minutes after I take it. (there's a label on the bottle to say to take at bedtime so that'd be why...) Other than that, just your normal moodiness, achy boobs, bloating... I can't tell what's being caused by the supplements and what's being caused by the pregnancy itself! But so far not too bad.

  • If you get the suppositories be careful and don't put them too far in. They can irritate your cervix which can causing minor bleeding and send you into a panic like me (I went to the dr today and was told my bleeding was most likely due to the suppositories). Oh and they're messy so lay down for 30 minutes after putting it in and wear a liner to collect the excess that leaks out. Hope that helps. Oh and I have to take them nightly until 10 weeks.
  • Ditto on what FireSpirt said. I'm on the compounded progesterone suppositories that are taken vaginally twice a day. I know this sounds sooo weird, but I started having "bubbly" urine. I thought I was probably just crazy and felt so weird googling, "bubbly pee" :) but I did find out that it is due to the progesterone tablets mixing with the urine. Odd fact. In any case, since I am taking them twice a day, I take one at night before I wake up and I set my alarm an hour before I actually get out of bed and use one so that it has time to absorb. They can get a little messy.

  • Even with the suppositories---there are different types.

I've been on Endometrin in the past. It's an EASY suppository. Feels like a pill. You put it in with this handy little applicator.

Now, I'm on Crinone 8%. It's a cream, but you insert it in a pre-filled applicator. So, I guess it's not really a suppository...it's a cream. But it goes in vaginally, and then requires a "vaginal sweep" every 24-48 hours. Meaning---you clean the leftover out manually every 24-48 hours. Oh, it's a LOT of fun.

Then, I've also been on injections of progesterone in oil. That's rough stuff.

Anything that's vaginal: invest in pantiliners.

  • Yeah, I just started mine today - Prometrium. My doc said I can do orally or vaginally but recommended vaginally. So that's what I'm doing. Yeah...was NOT expecting the excess 0_o. I have 200mg 2x/day until I'm 3 months along. Gotta remember a panty liner next time.

  • As others have said, there are pills, creams, and injections.  I'm on PIO (the injection) and while it's not my favorite time of the day, it's 1 poke, 1 cc, and I'll be on it until 2 days shy of 12w.  I'm excited to not be on it anymore, but of course it's more than worth it.  More than anything it's just a hassel, DH gives them to me after the boys are in bed, and by that time I'm just ready to lay down and crash, not get the vial ready and then have a needle pushed in my rump.  Good luck.
