What will your newborn sleep in?

I know this has been discussed before, but the search feature doesn't work for me.  What will your LO sleep in the for the first few months?  There are so many options I don't know where to start! If you have a specific brand/model can you list that too? Thank you!

Re: What will your newborn sleep in?

  • A bassinet next to our bed.  It's just your typical basket bassinet.  It was a hand-me-down.  We used it for DD and think it will be just fine for this LO as well those first few months.

  • Probably a PnP with a newborn sleeper next to our bed.
  • The cradle I slept in as a baby. I will have the RNP on standby in case he has acid reflux as I know the incline of that helps a lot with AR.

  • We have a cradle that has been used throughout our family.  We plan on using that in our bedroom for about 3 months.

  • Ours will sleep in a bassinet that me and my sister slept in and all my nephews and neice did also. However we are going to try to have the baby sleep in its crib at least 1 nap a day so they will be familiar to its room when it goes in there full time.

  • Both my boys slept in a PnP right next to my bed and we will be using the same thing for this LO.

  • My great grandfather's cradle. When I was a newborn mt dad built my mom a cradle for me but it got lost in history. I'm lucky my grandmother held onto her father's cradle. It needs painting and to be reassembled but it's still great for newborns. I'm unsure as to whether I can buy a mattress for it or if we'll have to make one tho?

  • First few weeks until there is a general routine, LO will be in the PnP in our room.  After that, he/she will be in the crib!

I loved the sleep "gowns". It's like a sleep sack but the bottom is open. Then we could hike it up to change her and pull it back down and wrap her back up. I'll do the same with the boys, I was far too tired to deal with the footies with all those snaps and it's going to be worse with two. ETA: I just realized you meant for a bed. She slept in the Pnp. The boys will share it 'til they start moving too much.

It's still great to know about the sleep gowns, I was going to ask about that at some point too... so thanks!

  • So is there a reason you wouldn't want a new born in their crib? The room is across the hall from ours so it's not like I have to go far. I know it might be more convenient to breast feed in your own bed, but otherwise is there another reason they can't just go in their room from the start???

I totally thought the same thing!!

OP: Our baby will bedshare until we start transitioning to the crib when she is more mobile (probably about 6 months or so).

I think it will just save time and honestly I am going to be a paranoid FTM so I know I will want to check on our baby girl frequently.  More importantly I plan on BFing so it would be a lot easier to have her right next to our bed.  I would like to transition her to a crib as soon as possible, but I want to be ready and have her be comfortable and close by until we move her into her nursery.

No - the baby will be fine in the crib!  I had a c/s with DD so I couldn't easily reach into the crib initially.  At the 4 week mark, my doc cleared me for more activity so I put her in her crib then! I hope to not have a RCS, but the baby will still be in our room for at least the first 2 weeks this time.  It was just easier for us.  FWIW the nursery is right across the hall from our room, too.

This, of course, will depend on if DD decides she needs to be a "baby" again and sleep in our bed...as she'll be 2 1/2, it is possible.  If that's the case, LO goes in the crib and we sleeptrain DD again!

  • I used an Arm's Reach Mini-Co Sleeper, loved it! That way baby can sleep right next to you in a separate little bed and you can see them too. I also found it so helpful when breastfeeding. I plan to use it again with this LO.

As a FTM, I know I will personally feel better having him/her in our room.  I plan on transitioning them out around 3 months.  The cradle I have was used for my aunt, mother and uncles and all of my siblings and cousins.  This baby will be the first from the new family generation to use this cradle and it's really important to me to continue the tradition.

That said, I don't see any problem letting baby sleep in the crib from day 1 if that's what works for you.  I know they recommend the baby sleeps in your room to help reduce the risk of SIDS, but I think this is one of the pieces that can be left up to your judgement.

My friend used them for her twins and we considered it, but we were afraid our dogs would bother the baby all night.  Since one of the dogs often has to go out at night, we can't leave the door closed or he would go in the house.  Now that we know we're getting the family cradle, I don't have to worry about it.  :)

  • Also we have 2 Graco PnPs (one as a gift and one that my mom had purchased before buying a crib for their house) and then DH bought a Chicco Lullaby LX one at a garage sale for $30.  It's similar to this one (it's from 2010):

OMG - it is amazing.  You can wash the padded mattress, which you can only spot clean the Graco one, and everything can be stored in it.  I highly recommend it.  And it's super cushy and easy to move.

  • With DS we used the Arms Reach Co-Sleeper Mini. We'll be using it again for this LO, I loved it! It's so much easier than having baby sleep in their own room. I had a c/s also so another huge reason why I didn't want to be getting out of bed a million times a night.

  • PNP, with the raised bassinet feature for at least the first week or so (I'm having a c-section, so having him close will be key).  After that, just like his older brothers, we'll transition him to his crib in the nursery.

For my previous two, none of slept good while the baby was in the room.  Too much grunting, squeaking, etc. to let us get any sleep.  ;-)

  • I used the Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper as well with ds and plan on doing the same for this lo.  However, my son only lasted a few weeks in the co-sleeper because when he would move around in his sleep he would grunt really loudly.  lol.  It would wake my dh so I wound up moving him into his crib really soon.

This was us! Once DD went into her crib, we all slept better.  I think she slept 6 or 7 hours straight that first night!

  • We used the Rock n' Play and the bouncer that vibrated for the first 3 weeks with DS. I think it was right around 3 weeks or 1 month that we transitioned him into his crib, which was a lot earlier than I was expecting, but it worked for everyone.

Related, we also used the Snuza (breathing monitor) clipped to his diaper every night for 6 months because I had trouble sleeping due to all the worrying I had that he'd stop breathing!

  • We will use a Graco PnP with bassinet feature for the first few months in our room, then it's off to the crib.  With DS1, we moved him to the crib at 3 months; we'll probably do something similar with DS2.

  • For night time sleeping baby will be in a Arm's Reach co-sleeper next to our bed. During the day baby will sleep in a "Slumber Time Elite" bassinet by Simmons as it's easier to use in the living/dining room.

After baby has outgrown the co-sleeper we'll move him/her to the crib in the nursery.

  • We are registering for the Fisher Price Rock N Play Sleeper (I think that is what it's called...). We have a small bedroom, and wouldn't have room for a pack n play and be able to move around the bedroom, and the Fisher Price one is small and portable. It also has good reviews from everything I have read.
  • If they are quiet in their skeep, a co sleeper. If not their crib in their room as DH is a light sleeper.
