Clothing for baby girls

I know this is a very dumb question, but I have been looking at all the cute baby clothes and I am a little confused. Is it really feasible to put a newborn or 1 month old in leggings? What about tights or baby legs?  I would love to buy dresses but since it is going to be winter time you probably would end up with 3 pieces of clothing (onesie+dress+tights/leggings) and it seems to me like it would make diaper changes quite difficult. Maybe I am over-thinking this, but I just don't want to end up with a lot of cute clothes that I am not going to use.

Please let me know what are your thought on this. TIA!

  • I may have one or two outfits in the beginning, but for the most part I expect her to be in sleepers, that's what I did with DS.  I think it is very possible to get newborns into those clothes, I just don't know how practical it is, it really makes no sense to me unless you are going to a special event of some kind.

  • Truthfully, you will mostly put your baby in sleepers/sleep & play or one piece outfits (this will be baby #4 for me). I did buy two dresses - one for Christmas and one just to have for other occasions. We will be at home most of the time, so I stocked up on fleecy sleep & play outfits and a few pants/tops outfits. If we have somewhere special to go, I'll put her in a dress with tights or maybe even a little pair of jeans or something.

  • We used baby legs right away.  Mostly we used to footed sleepers though.

  • I have a boy and a girl and both times the first few months they wore only onesies with baby legs to keep them warm.  LOVE LOVE LOVE baby legs!  It was so much easier for diaper changes.  However, I don't take my babies out in public for several weeks so obviously I can control the heat/ac in the house.  Not to mention, we hold our babies alot so their always in blankets anyways.  I will say one thing I did forget to buy was socks.  Of course people will always buy you outfits but everyone seems to forget socks.  Luckily for me, my boss' wife remembered this and she always buys our kids a pack of the most adorable socks!
  • Thanks ladies! I think I will restrain myself from buying lots of outfits. It is just so hard since I already have lots of onepieces from my son.

  • If you have a lot left over from your son, I'd still go out and buy some cozy, girly one pieces. Carters (including the versions at Walmart and Target) has a bunch that have a little ruffle butt and ballet slipper style feet. They are so adorable and girly while still being super easy. I think having those has helped me in my urge to buy the adorable dresses that I just know aren't as practical. I have a TON of clothes from my son and don't plan on using any of it except for the sleep sacks and onesies, so I bought all girly stuff for this one (mostly at garage sales from friends).

  • I agree with everyone else.  My DD was born in the summer, so it was easier to put her in cute little dresses (no need for tights/onesie under it), but with DS born in February, he lived in sleepers.  That is my plan again for this winter baby - sleepers no matter what...boy or girl.

  • Last time around with DS, we had one or two cuter outfits for each size range in the beginning (newborn, 0-3, 3-6) and then mainly just either footed sleepers or comfy sets he could sleep in (onesie, sweatpants, little button up jacket, hat, etc.).  When they are that little, you're not going to be dressing them up all that often.  I dressed DS up for like the first time we went to the pedi and then he threw up all over himself and I got over it & he wore comfy sets for the rest of the time until he was through the spit up and explosive poo stages :)
