3rd Trimester

In labor what to eat?

Contractions finally started, hadn't really had BH till this morning, now having fairly strong contractions every 15 min or so. I didn't have much to eat today, we were planning on going out for sushi but that doesn't sound good now. What would you eat?

Re: In labor what to eat?

  • Something with lots of protein and veggies that will give you energy! Good luck with your labor! :D Maybe a gatorade or something similar for some electrolytes too.

  • I would not eat sushi unless you know its an absolutely fabulous place with very fresh food. I can't imagine getting sick on sushi and being in labor!

Spicy tex-mex has been my craving lately though.

I agree with this. Once you get to the hospital, they probably won't let you eat much until after the baby comes. Good luck!

  • As a doula, here is my 2 cents:

In all honesty I would avoid veggies - you don't want to get gassy.  You should eat something easily digestible, high in carbs (carbs convert to energy).  Plain buttered pasta, waffles, toast, plain chicken breast with rice, things along those lines,.  Nothing spicy.  Not to be gross but nothing you want to see come back up.  Definitely drink gatorage, water, again no soda or anything carbonated.  Remember to pee often because a full bladder can keep the baby from descending.  Not to mention sitting on the toilet is one of the most comfortable positions during labor.  HTH!

  • My birthing instructor suggested eating carbs and proteins in early labor for energy. As much as I love veggies, I too would avoid them because of gas.
Sept 2013 started TTC#2 (never got PP period so hoping for the first egg to drop)
Jan 2014 - diagnosed POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) and told pregnancy not possible without egg donor because my ovaries would never function again with my hormone levels (FSH 136, LH 98.6, AMH <.03, estradiol 0, HCG 7) - using acupuncture, chiropractic care and TCM herbs / supplements
March 11, 2014 ovulated despite every doctors prognosis!!!
Oct 2014 hormones (FSH 48, Estradiol 89, HCG 1) not good, but heckuva lot better!

  • I had peanut butter on crackers before going in for an induction. It was enough to keep my energy up without feeling/getting sick.

  • Something filling that will give your energy. Once you get to the hospital they won't let you eat so eat up (not pig out) now. I wish so badly I would have eaten before I went to the hospital last time.

  • Something that won't hurt coming back up if you end up puking your guts out like I did.

    I vote for ice cream.

    And definitely NOT fresh veggies.

  • My midwife suggested any food that is easily digested because most likely once you get in to active labor your tummy will be upset and you may vomit - gross I know but that is what she said. She has suggested yogurt, perhaps a small sandwich (like grilled cheese), any fruit, etc...you get the drift. Good luck to you!
  • I really wouldn't eat much, if anything, crackers or something bland like that. I threw up profusely during labor and it was awful when paired with the later, stronger contractions.

  • Protein + Carbs. I'd recommend a baked potato (loaded is fine... it tastes the same coming up as going down... it's almost all I ate during 1st tri when I was non-stop puking.)

  • I ate black bean vegetable soup right after my water broke before we went to the hospital last time, for the protein and all the good nutrients.

I then pooped it out on the table.

I would not recommend black bean vegetable soup.  Lol.
