Pregnant after 35

12 week appointment, more good news!

I am just so stinkin' happy to read all these updates today! So much wonderful news! I am really happy for all of you and hope that the wave of good news will just keep rolling along.

Here's my contribution: today was my 12w appointment. The last two weeks have been horrible--I had a bad head cold followed by sinus trouble and several migraines. I had the worst migraine in at least 20 years on Friday--screaming head pain, puking my guts out every 20 minutes ALL DAY LONG, horrible light and noise sensitivity, the whole magilla. The ob was actually threatening to send me to the hospital to get IV fluids, but thank God for Phenergan suppositories!! I was able to rehydrate on my couch after all. Of course, I was scared that being so sick might hurt the baby, so I was REALLY eager to hear the heartbeat for the first time today (saw it on dating u/s but didn't hear it). The ob got stuck in a traffic jam on the way in this morning so she was running "a little behind," which meant I saw her for my 10:45 appointment promptly at 12:30.

"I don't want to get my hopes up," I say to her as she's getting out the Doppler, "since I'm only 12 weeks and have an anterior placenta acting as a big muffler, but we sure would like to hear a heartbeat..."

"Let's see," she says, touching the thing to my belly, and BAM! She's not there two seconds and we hear it, strong and clear and loud as can be. It really is the most beautiful sound in the world. 170 BPM, strong and regular. This kid's heart sounds like a million bucks.

I am so relieved to be at the twelve week mark. We came home from the appointment and told my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law, my aunt, and we told my parents they can now tell their friends. The entire Eastern US should know by tomorrow morning.

There's just the chromosomal testing left, and then I feel like I can truly relax and enjoy my pregnancy. I was supposed to get blood drawn for the MaterniT21 test today, but the "special phlebotomist" they get to do those was out today taking care of a sick kid, so I will have to come back in for that.

Still, we heard the heartbeat!!! That made everything worthwhile.

Re: 12 week appointment, more good news!

  • What a relief to hear the HB and know that you have successfully passed the first trimester mark! And now that everyone knows, it will be easier to get out of your own head and just enjoy the experience without worrying about revealing too much too soon!

I cannot wait to be out of the trimester and to have some breathing room (and hopefully no more morning sickness all day long!). I wish there was a way on the Bump to share the audible recordings of HBs!

Yes, it absolutely did!! She took the Doppler off and I said, "Okay, everything else is gravy," with a big stupid grin on my face.
