1st Trimester screening

I just made my appointment for this today, I know this is an optional screening.

Will you be doing it?

Re: 1st Trimester screening

  • Yes, we have already talked to our dr and asked for any tests we can do.
  • Loading the player...
  • We are doing it because otherwise, we wait until 20 weeks for an US.

  • I know I may sound really dumb but what exactly is a 1st trimester screening?

It screens for three chromosomal defects (Downs Syndrome and two others), so if this screening (which is an ultra sound and blood test) come back abnormal you can elect to have diagnostic tests where they actually take cell samples of the fetus.

    Oh! ok thanks :D

  • It isn't optional at my OB, so yes we will be getting it done.
  • Can you have the U/S without the screening?

  • Yes, our sequential screen is already scheduled. I'm the type of person who needs to know. Even if we get back some terrible odds, it will be better for my mental health than not knowing.

  • We'll be doing the NT scan and hopefully the MaterniT21 or Harmony tests.

  • I'm so happy to hear other moms aren't doing this testing....I thought I was the only one. I understand both sides of it, I just don't think I can deal withe the anxiety I would feel with high odds. I already have higher odds and I know that because of my age. We had a long discussion with our doctor yesterday about it and have decided to just wait for the second tri level 2 ultrasound
  • Nope, it's an intrusion we don't need and the reliability isn't high enough for a scientific person like myself, so I don't see the point.

  • We did the first time around and will do it again.

  • I'll do it since it's not invasive but the outcome really doesn't matter much. It would only be used to help me prepare.

  • I'm doing it, too, because I want another ultrasound before 20 weeks!

  • I'll be doing the NT scan again.  I know it's just an estimate, but also the ultrasound can show pretty significant issues at that point, which I'd like to be aware of.   If I do further testing would depend on the NT results.
  • No. We didn't do it with the 1st and won't do it this time. I don't need to put myself through any more stress worrying about some odds from an early test result. My OB even said she did it with her 1st and the odds came back pretty high for Downs and she spent the rest of the time freaking out and her daughter was perfectly normal. She didn't do it the 2nd time around.

ETA: I also would not want any invasive testing done after the screening regardless of the results, so I see no point to the screening for myself.

  • I plan to have the screening.

Here is some more information for FTMs who want to understand what this is

    https://www.americanpregnancy.org/prenataltesting/firstscreen.html

  • We won't be having them done.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • We did not do them last time and will not be doing them this time.  One of my good friends did do them and it showed a high probability for DS.  They had a level 2 u/s and an amnio done and found that they were having a perfectly healthy little girl.  I don't need that stress.

We'll have what we'll have and we'll deal with it in May/June.

  • DH wants it done, but I'm not sure yet. I don't know that I would be willing to do CVS and I know that I don't want amniocentesis, so really I think that it's pointless.

  • I will be doing it and already made the appointments (one for bloodwork, then one for ultrasound and results). I'm doing the private one, even though I qualify for the free blood tests ones from the government, because I will know by 13 weeks instead of 20.

  • I didn't do it with my first two and will not be doing it with this one.
  • Yes, we are doing it.
  • Thanks for this thread - I actually learned a lot from it. I'm a FTM and am curious if this was something other people's DRs offered to them, or was it something you requested (if you are having it done)?
  • I'm debating...with DD we were told that the odds for DS were very high and if I had wanted to terminate my pg that was the time...it was such a scary time and unnecessary worry since we would have kept DD no matter what that now I'm conflicted :/
