3rd Trimester

Back from a 9 hr visit to the hospital :( Hydronephrosis!

Woke up this AM totally fine, had a nice pee, then started experiencing severe burning and pain when trying to pee. Only dribbles would come out. Spent an hour and a half off and on the toilet. Called OB at 10 to find out the results of my urine culture (negative) so she sent me to the OB unit to be 'assessed'. OB assessed me, sent me for a kidney/bladder ultrasound. Ended up staying there on a stretcher for 9 hrs. While waiting I developed crippling left sided back pain. Awesome. Turns out, I have hydronephrosis causing me all this pain.

Now its 3am and I can't sleep with this back pain. Took a tylenol and sitting on a heating pad. Ughhh. 6 weeks can't go by soon enough!!

Anyone else have this?

  • Yes I did. And it was awful! I didnt eat or sleep for like 3 days and had the nausea and vomiting that sometimes goes along with it. Then the baby must have moved or something b/c all the pain just dissapeared! Sorry you are going through this. Hope you are feeling better soon! The good part is that they told me it doesnt effect the baby, just me!

  • I had it with DD at about 23 weeks. They gave me Percocet in the hospital to control the pain and had me lay on the side opposite the pain. It cleared after a couple of days but was very painful for a little while. I hope you feel better soon! Get lots of rest!

  • I had something similar--Pyelonephritis, a kidney infection on the right side.  I spent 2 nights in the hospital and they gave me IV antibiotics and fluids.  They sent me home with a 10-day treatment dose of antibiotics and now I'm on preventative antibiotics until the baby is 6 weeks old (to prevent any more kidney infections from developing for the rest of the pregnancy).

I know how awful it is and how much pain you're in and I hope you feel better soon!

  • Greetings.  I am also 24 weeks pregnant with my second son.  This week I had the same problem.  The right flank pain was so bad that I went to the ER fri night.  The pain was way worse than labor ever was with my son.  They started me on morpine and IV fluids.  The morphine definietely helped and they it was safe for the pregnancy (not recommended for under 17 weeks).  The morphine kind of blanketed the pain so I could rest a little bit.  The iv fluids helped too.  They first thought it was a kidney stone but no stone was seen (although they could only do ultrasound which is not the recommended scan for diagnosing kidney stones; the gold standard test would be a CT scan which is radiation and not suitable for a pregnancy).  I was kept over night for observation and also for pain control.  After 14 hrs the pain just went away but I was afraid to go home because of the pain.  Now I've been home for 2 days and am pain free.  I am taking ampiciliin 2x a day because my doc does not want me to develop a UTI on top of the hydronephrosis.  If the pain is so bad (and I know it can be) I would go back to the ER and demand morphine.  Im a pretty tough chick (no pain meds for the birth of my son) but this pain was just too intense.  Good luck.  Hope this helps.
  • I half wonder if this is what I went in for during my 36th week of pregnancy. They sent me home, and on the paper it said "normal pregnancy pains". Liars. I had pain, and sudden loss of control of my bladder. The urgency was horrible, but not much was coming out. 1-2 days later, the pain vanished.

I lost control as well. A few times I stood up and pee came pouring down my legs!
