High-Risk Pregnancy

Glyburide, metformin, insulin...?

Hi diabetic mommies!

I was just wondering what all your experiences were with meds during pregnancy.  I was diagnosed type 2 in January and immediately put on metformin, which I'm still on now.  They didn't give me any diet advice at all in the beginning, I started my low carb diet and blood sugar checks a few weeks ago when I had my first Sweet Success appointment.  Every week, SS calls me after I submit my weekly blood sugars, and today the nurse mentioned I may be put on glyburide to help with my fasting numbers, which are usually a little high (normally in the 90s).

After doing some research through the dreaded Google, I'm kind of feeling like I should decline the glyburide and push for nighttime insulin.  I originally wanted to avoid insulin all together, but everything I read says it's the absolute safest thing for my baby.

I was just wondering what everyone else is doing to control their preexisting diabetes. I want to be well informed before my next SS appointment next week, so I don't just blindly follow whatever suggested meds they want me on.

Re: Glyburide, metformin, insulin...?

  • I have type 2 as well. Diagnosed about 3 years ago, I was taking Victoza before I found out I was pg, but was immediately switched to short acting insulin with meals after I found out.  I've been doing pretty well controlling my sugars with this plan, its easy to adjust as my sugars get higher, and other than injecting myself 3 times a day its really not too bad.  I'm currently not taking the long acting insulin because the short acting in combination with the 2000mg of Metformin seems to be working all my morning sugars are under 90.  Good luck!

  • I was initially prescribed glyburide for fasting numbers in the low 90s. I pushed for about a week, because I was not comfortable with the med and my OB finally agreed to switch me to insulin.

  • With DS, I had GD and towards the final few weeks of pregnancy, I was put on glyburide. This was in 2009. Now, the same endo mentioned that glyburide is not recommedned in pregnancy and she put me on insulin since I found out that I was diabetic from week 9. I am on fast acting insulin for meals and bedtime insulin.

  • I take glyburide during the day and I am on insulin at night. Glyburide made me go too low in the middle of the night which is why I'm on insulin to control my fasting numbers. I originally was a little bummed about insulin but I don't mind it. My diabetic nurse also told me whatever I do, don't google anything (especially with regard to ketones). She said google will make me crazy and freak out, haha. As with any meds, there are potential risks to the baby, but, generally speaking if you didn't take the meds to help what would happen. It's a catch-22 but I know there's really not a lot of choices when it comes to diabetes and pregnancy!!!
