TDaP

What are you ladies planning to do about the TDaP vaccine? My understanding is that the CDC has historically recommended getting it immediately after giving birth, but this year for the first time they're recommending that women do it in the third trimester. I wish my docs had told me to do it before conceiving, but they didn't. I have no problem with vaccines in general and plan to get a flu shot in a couple of weks and to vaccinate baby girl on the CDC schedule, but I have to say I'm a bit nervous to get the TDaP in the very first year they're recommending it during pregnancy. I'm thinking about getting it immediately after she's born. Any thoughts?

Re: TDaP

  • I plan to ask at my appt on Weds. This article in today's NYTimes that talks about pertussis and vaccines, I found it helpful:

  • I don't see any harm in getting it right away after birth, so if that is what makes you more comfortable, that's what I would do.  FWIW, I got mine before TTC and don't remember any side effects aside from the bruised arm afterward (I always get that with a tentanus shot!).

I had a pertussis booster when Jack was born, so I know mine is up to date.  I will have a TDaP while in hospital following delivery.

My guess would be that they want to make sure you are vaccinated before you ever come into contact with your baby.  I'm VERY pro-vaccine, but I feel squicky about having them while pregnant, so I completely understand your hesitation.

I had the booster after MK was born, too.  As of my last bloodwork, all of the vaccines were fine.  If I need to get the TDAP after this LO is born, then I will get it in the hospital.

  • I've been wondering about this too, so I'm glad you posted it. I like the idea of getting it in the hospital.  I am going to ask my OB about that.

  • I will be getting mine as long as my OB suggests it.

  • You might be able to find some information here: https://www.nvic.org/Vaccines-and-Diseases/Whooping-Cough.aspx

I also recommend reading the actual vaccine inserts (your doctor can provide this for the specific vaccine they wish to administer).

I would also like to note that since the change in the vaccine in the 90's the CDC is unsure as to the efficacy and length of immunity for pertussis.  I would be happy to provide that info if anyone is interested.

  • We got everyone up to date with their DTaP/Tdap boosters last year, so we're good. Our OB said that if anyone hadn't received it yet to do it before the babies come, except me - she would have had me wait until immediately after delivery (but I'm UTD, so no need).

  • My OB gave me my flu shot when I was in last week and recommended DH and DS get both the flu shot and TDaP ASAP (unless DS's is still up-to-date). She said they give TDaP to mamas at 28 weeks. I'm planning on doing whatever's recommended when it comes to vaccines.

  • My OB told me at my last visit that I will get mine in the hospital after delivery. He recommended anyone that will be around the baby to get theirs anytime before the baby is born. DH got his while we were there and I got my flu shot that visit as well.

  • I work in healthcare, so I am already vaccinated. I did make DH get his flu Tdap this fall, will insist on our parents doing the same.

MIL said that her dad would absolutely refuse, my response was "That's fine, but he's not holding the baby until 6mo." He spends a lot of time in a nursing home where cases would not surprise me... Pertussis is rampant here is not to be taken lightly.

  • Thanks, guys.  My husband got his TDaP a few weeks ago and both sides of the family are either already vaccinated or will be before she gets here.  I think I'm probably going to wait and get mine in the hospital right after she's born.

  • Great thread - glad to read the various opinions. I'm going to ask my OB about it tomorrow as well as the flu vaccine which I never get normally. I'm 90% sure I want the TDaP during pregnancy because a friend of mine's baby boy died at 8 weeks old from Pertussis a couple of years ago - I've read it can take 1-2 weeks for your body to become protected after the vaccine and I wouldn't want to pass it along to the baby in that time in the awful case that I became infected myself before or during that period.

ETA: My friend is actually a spokesperson for Sounds of Pertussis now, you can hear her tell her story here: https://soundsofpertussis.com/what-is-pertussis.cfm
