LO is just over five months and we decided to try oatmeal for the first time this weekend. I made it super liquidy with bm.
Anyway, he seemed interested and it went well. The funny thing is, he kind of kept sticking his tongue out and lapping at it like a little puppy. I didn't want to put the spoon right in his mouth without him opening it, since I know you're not supposed to "force" the food on them.
In my FTM overthinking, I'm wondering if the cute tongue lapping thing is really his reflex, which means he's not ready for solids yet? Or is it just because he doesn't know to open his mouth yet?
I do think he swallowed some of it, and there wasn't any gagging.
Any thoughts? TIA!
Re: Tongue thrust reflex?
I have two babies and got two different reactions, so I might be able to help!
With Edie, I got the reaction you did, at 5.5m. But I guess what I did could be considered "forcing". I just stuck with it.
But this week, with Adeline (at over 6m), she just opened her mouth wide open every time. I even gave her the spoon and she did what she was supposed to do with it!
It was totally amazing and super easy with Adeline. The first time, I didn't even give her a bib! I did the 2nd time because I let her hold the spoon.
