beep... beep... we interrupt this regularly scheduled Bump drama for an actual baby-related question...
Baby girl caught a cold (sinus infection, maybe?) her first week of daycare. I caught it too, and it took foreeeevvvveerrr to clear up for both of us. At her 4 month well visit, the ped said she had some residual fluid left in her ears from the cold, but it should clear up on its own and shouldn't bother her.
Now she's been fussy on and off for a few days. She grabs at her ears a few times a day, which is not something I've ever seen her do before. My mom says she suddenly shrieked and grabbed her ears on Friday, although I haven't seen this. She doesn't have a fever though, she's still sleeping great at night and she'll have hours of being happy and playful between the fussing.
Does this sound like an ear infection? I'm not sure what to think. This doesn't seem like nothing, but it doesn't seem that bad either. Dr. Google made it sound like if I brought her to the doctor, they'd automatically give her antibiotics just because she's an infant, even though antibiotics are usually useless for ear infections. I'm usually all for modern medicine but I am not cool with unnecessary antibiotics for my baby.
Re: ear infection?
Antibiotics are not useless for ear infections- they are just overprescribed and many ear infections can clear without them. Yes, the dr will probably prescribe them, but you can always give a day or two to see if it gets better before actually administering them.
With no fever though, it doesn't sound like an infection. Our pedi said ear tugging can happen at this age...could be some early teething.
This is going to sound mean, so take it for what its worth, You could place one hand over each ear (covering them completely) and push gently, if she has an ear infection it will change the pressure in her ears and she will cry. If she has an infection, I'd take her to the doc, I always went to the doc for ear infections when I was young and they did a wide range of things to help, from antibiotics, to an ear lavage, or even ear drops.

That's not always true. C just had a raging ear infect but never spiked a fever. I also had them regularly as a child and never had a fever. We figured C had one when she went from being a great sleeper to an "I won't lay down for anything" sleeper. She also had a cold at that time. I'd say take the LO and check it out.
