BLW or finger foods?

Anyone giving their LOs fingers foods, not necessarily as a meal, but to give them practice with picking up and feeding themselves?

What kind of foods to give them? DS has no teeth

Re: BLW or finger foods?

  • Our doc recommended the puffs now that he has the pincher grasp. We will start with those.

  • Good question! I'd also love to know!! :)

DS hates the puffs..LOL..he throws them at the dogs. The only thing I have give him was a big chunk of apple, he would bite and suck on that for a little while, but was unable to actually bite of pieces of apple...eventually he threw it to the floor.

  • Until he has teeth no on finger foods. I know they are suppose to melt in your mouth but if you have tried it out first they don't melt all that quick.
  • Livi has her two front bottom teeth but no finger food until the doc says its ok.  I'll add that since she's not a big fan of the teething rings we tried, I froze some mini bagel halves and she'll gnaw on them for a little bit, then she gives it to Baylie

  • We are doing BLW. He gets steamed veggies (broccoli, carrots, zucchini, green beans, sweet potato, potato) and raw veggies like cucumber spears and bell peppers.  He loves fruit too...avocado, watermelon, apples (I cook them until they are soft), kiwi, banana and pears.

We are waiting a few weeks to introduce meats and grains.  We wanted to give him a couple of weeks to get used to eating solids before opening up a full menu.

ETA: As per the BLW book, we do all of the above in strips so he can hold onto the foods in his hand.  He feeds all of the above to himself.  At 6.5 months he's got really great hand-eye coordination which I believe BLW has helped him with.

  • I have been thinking about this today as well. We were given those mesh food bags as a baby shower gift and am wondering about putting bananas or other soft foods in there to see if he eats off it. The mesh won't allow any big chunks to go through but lets LO learn about foods and texture.

    Wrong. Just wrong.

Plenty of babies eat finger/table foods before they have teeth. Some babies don't get teeth until 1 year old...not many parents in the US wait that long to introduce finger/table foods.

FWIW, we BLW. Before she had teeth (her first 2 came in in the last week) she had apple slices, toast sticks, cheese sticks, carrot sticks, pasta, potatoes, and other things. She loved (and still loves) gumming on them.

If you give them a "stick" of food, remember "half to hold and half to eat". At this age LO still has trouble getting food out of his/her fist. So the stick works best if it's at least 1 1/2 times their fist. So part is in their fist and part sticks out. Once they gnaw the part sticking out, they can't generally access the part in their fist. Eventually they drop it and go to something else.

    GL!

Haha! I guess it's about taste or maybe texture. My god daughter loved them when she was younger. We are going to wait and see if Liam likes them or not. He's already had a rough day. We have tried to mesh feeder. He likes it when we put ice cubes in it but not banana...maybe I should try something else in it soon.

My post was in reference to the Gerber puffs. Guess I should have made it clear. Peyton gnaws on a clothes pin, cold wash cloth, apple slices and chicken bones. Yes! Clothes pins and chicken bones! Lol! The "stick" I'm okay with, it's those tiny Gerber puffs that do not dissolve as quickly as advertised we are opposed to! If your child doesn't produce an adaquate amount of slobber they take forever to melt. Please try one and let me know what you think.
  • We do all the time... we did that before cereal, actually. We do veggie sticks like cucumber or carrot or red pepper... or fruit slices like banana, nectarine, peach, apple... just whatever you have around. Make sure you cut the pieces so big that there's no way they'd be able to choke on them, and then keep your eye on them anyways just in case. We've also given her some of our yam fries, avocado, and some other softer stuff but at this point she just makes a huge mess with it rather than actually getting much in her mouth. Stick with the harder foods that are just for sucking on (and if they're cooled in the fridge, they're GREAT for teething!). DD loves it!!

    What's BLW?

Baby Led Weaning. There are many advocates for it. I see quite a few of them on the Attatchment Parenting board.

These are what our ped recommended also. I bought some and LO just did not seem ready. So I think I might wait another month until he gets them again.

i think i might try giving apple sticks, or sweet potatoe sticks (baked). He hates the puffs. he can't pick them up and when he does, it stuck in his fist...LOL...so he just throws them to the dogs. dogs are loving him more and more! but I think I will try and give him some table foods, see how he does.

    thanks for tips!!!
