DH is military and we are very very far from family and no friends here. My parents came out last time so I'm hoping they'll be here for the LO's birth. Do you have someone who can come out and help you? I'm having a c/s so if there is no one to watch DS DH will have to miss the birth. As for you, can kid #1 stay in the labor/delivery room with you and then DH just go home at night with him?
How old is he? Maybe by that time he will have made good enough friends with someone at school that the family won't mind letting him have a sleepover during that time. Sorry if that's a really stupid suggestion. We go to church, so when we move to a new place we usually get to know at least a few people fairly well within the months following.
I'm in a similar situation. We are going to hire a doula if we can't find someone that we trust to help us out. The doula will either watch my daughter or will be with me while my husband watches our daughter until family can arrive.
It sounds like he's school aged, so he might be able to hang out in your room with you and not be too much in the way, maybe just wait in the waiting room during the actual delivery?
My brother was 3 when I was born, and my mom has told me about him being in the room with her while my grandparents drove an hour to get him. The nurses were actually excited to play with a toddler rather than just babies!
I don't know about DC, but over here in WA state, there are a few 24 hour daycares. That's another option for you, find a decent daycare, and get your son used to the people there, and he can go there if he needs to during labor
My son is 4 so I wouldn't feel comfortable with him in the delivery room the entire time. My mom will be helping out but it's hard to time that just right and she can't drop her life to be her for weeks before the baby even gets here. Hopefully we can meet some people that would be willing to help us out. We still have some time:)
