thumb/finger suckers

DD sucks her thumb & fingers. We're ok with this. She's never liked a pacifier so we're glad she has a way to self-soothe. The issue is that she has large red sore spots on both index fingers. They don't seem to bother her, but I'm wondering if we should intervene before they get worse. Yesterday DH put mittens on her, but she sucked on them anyway. Has anyone else had this issue? Did you do anything about it?

    me too! She starts with the thumb then moves to the whole hand, sometimes she tries to suck on both hands!

    Same here! Sometimes just his thumb finds its way into his mouth, but mostly it's a fist...or two fists...or he grabs my finger and tries to shove it in along with both fists. No red spots on his hands, though.

    She takes a bink but will also suck on her hands. If it makes her happy I'm not going to worry about it. At least not for now.

    DS sucks his whole hand too. We put mittens on but only to keep him from scratching himself and we change them often otherwise they smell like sour milk lol

    This. Except we try to take his hands away and offer the paci. But most times he finds his hands again. No red spots on hands but I do notice the area around his mouth getting red because of all the saliva.

    My LO sucks his hands too but last week was able to find just his thumb and sucks his thumb regularly...I havent noticed any redness, though...but its normal for regular finger suckers to develop callouses overtime, but they eventually go away when then stop...

    good to know! It doesn't seem to hurt her at all, so I guess we'll just leave them alone

    DD puts her whole fist in her mouth, which I think will be a good party trick when she gets older.

    I say as long as the skin isn't broken or anything, it will probably callous (sp?), right?  You should be OK.
