purees v finger food ?

DS loves purees, but hates finger foods outside of his puffs and pancakes. We've been trying chunks of carrots, peas and green beans but he will eat a piece or two and refuse the rest (but will inhale them if it's pureed). We've also done a little pasta, ground beef and chicken and the same thing.

He's 9 months old and I've made almost all of his food. We're out of purees and since "Solids before 1 are just for fun", should I continue to make purees and offer the finger foods each time but not worry about it if he doesn't eat them or skip the purees and just offer the finger foods (and still not worry?)? He's still on 26oz of formula/BM a day, but I still want to make sure he's getting enough

Re: purees v finger food ?

  • What type of purees are you giving DS? Are they finely pureed or do they have some "chunks" to them?

We still give semi-pureed food to E along with finger foods during mealtime.  We have been gradually increasing the "chunkiness" (for lack of better word) to her purees.  My advice would be to maybe try doing that and keep giving him finger foods to try at every meal.

We have had success with finger foods such as banana (you can coat them with cheerio dust if they are hard for him to grasp), avocado, cheerios, strawberries, toast with a bit of applesauce, to name a few.  Sometimes E will eat all her finger foods and sometimes she will just play around with it.  I try not to worry too much about how much she eats and try to look at it as a learning experience for her. (She is still gettting BM 4-6 times per day). Finger foods also help them to develop the pincher grip too.

Like you, I also have a puffoholic on my hands...girl loves her puffs!

  • i've been making them more chunky as time goes on. he definitely prefers fruits to veggies and will eat chunky peaches but won't eat chunky green beans unless mixed in with a smoother puree (this time sweet potato).

i forgot about banana, he loves eating that. he also loves the gerber lil crunchies, he picks those out of all of his finger foods on his tray :S

  • It sounds like he is eating enough solids :) I think it is up to you whether or not you want to continue making more purees.

I started out making all my own purees, but have recently switched over to organic jarred baby food because my cooking skills are less than par and I wanted to give her more variety of foods.  She usually gets about 1/2 jar per meal after I give her some finger foods to munch on.

Also we just tried hummus this past week on pita bread and she loved it! I cut it into little strips for her-messy but she enjoyed it!

  • I might be accidentally hijacking this post, but I just have a question for y'all about the finger food thing...

My DS is awesome at picking things up, but it doesn't usually make it to his mouth. He just balls the puff or whatever in his fat lil' fist but doesn't realize he can then open his hand & put the puff in his mouth.

Any tips on how to help him make this connection?  Any tricks that worked with your LO?  Or is it just something he will figure out on his own?
