January 2012 Moms

I'm falling apart :(

I'm getting really discouraged and borderline depressed. I may sound too dramatic for some and maybe I'll feel the same about it in a couple weeks when my PMS/AF are done, BUT right now I'm not joking when I say that I feel completely defeated.

DD was always a "bad" sleeper and I mean BAD. But about 2 months ago we did sleep training that worked amazingly good! She barely cried the first night and since then was sleeping through the night.

Then two weeks ago things started getting worse again and she's been teething. So obviously I didn't let her CIO as she was in pain and it had nothing to do with a "bad habit". With some tylenol and cuddles she'd eventually go to sleep (around 11pm vs the usual 8.30pm) but would be out for the rest of the night.... not bad at all!

But last night and the night before things are going back to the "bad habit" era. Even when not in pain (she's been off Tylenol for 2 days without problems) she wants to be held until she falls asleep only to wake up 2hrs later and demanding somebody or at least has their hand in the crib with her. She immediately falls asleep and as soon as you leave she wakes up again screaming. I tried letting her CIO (3 min at a time) and it is awful. She's screaming her head off... I walk in, touch her face she's out, walk out, UP SCREAMING

WHAT DO I DO? I really feel completely hopeless.

  • We have had some regression in sleep habits lately too. I think it's just a normal phase. I know it's not really helpful but try to remember that this is a phase that will pass and you will be a happy mama again (hopefully soon). I remember during the early newborn stage being at my wits end and now I barely remember it.

  • This is why we have fallen back into bedsharing again.  The kid may wake me up 3 or 5 times a night, but at least all I have to do is roll over and give him a boob or put my hand on him to get him to settle back down again.

  • Thank you ladies for the encouraging words! I really does help!

I wish I still had working boobs I could flop out and have her go at it while I dose off LOL

Even with working boobs, this phase sucks.  He's doing better now that he cut his first tooth, but he would fuss when I'd try to put him on the boob and fight me for a while.  When he did got to sleep, I'd try to reclaim my boob so I could get more comfortable and sleep, but he'd wake up.

Can you tag team with DH so you can get some sleep?  I know that helped me get enough sleep to give it another go the next day.  Every baby is different, but best I can suggest is to try to stick to the normal routine as best you can.  Even if it seems futile, LO will be more likely to sleep if you go through the normal routines.

  • namara, i can only imagine how tiring that must be. i guess we are all in the same boat really.

dh has been very helpful at least last night he really stepped up around 1 am so at least i didnt have to get up with only 4 hrs left until it was time to get up again.

and we certainly tried to stick with the routine but man she is totally off.

thats why i feel like im losing control:/

Take a deep breath, let it out, repeat this: my child will not be awake forever. It will get better."

It's a stage or illness or the moon is in the wrong phase of purple, but it won't last forever. I know when you're exhausted it feels like the entire world is coming crashing down on your head (I really do -- I was there, in my bathrobe, with screaming child in the front yard at 1 a.m. earlier this week -- it's becoming a defining moment of my life as a mother) but it really will be OK. *insert giant Internet hug here*

Thank you LC!!!! You are right! In the moment of complete helplesness you feel like you are failing as a mother... And my hormone disaster certainly doesn't help. I do feel better today:) Thanks again for all the kind words, to ALL, the encouragement and this internet hug, I needed that :)

  • Big hugs.

This child(3) has been my hardest when it comes to sleep. She loved to nurse on me all night. Literally, she had my boob in her mouth all night and would wake me enough to switch sides. I was really started to have trouble sleeping. She would kick me more at night and the position I had to sleep in was painful. We just started putting her in her crib about 2-3 weeks ago. The first night was really though. I have used the Ferber book with all 3 kids, with the intervals for comforting them. After a couple days, she started doing okay. I don't run to her if she cries right away. A lot of the time, she will figure it out on her own and go back to bed. Now, I give her about 10 min before I check on her. I rarely ever gets to that. I'd just recommend that you slowly lengthen the time in between visits. I put on her little wave noise making and shoved her lovey in my bra so it would smell like me when I put her to bed. Nothing like walking around the house with a little pooh blanket sticking out of your shirt but I think it helped.

I hope you get some relief soon. Sleep training and potty training are just tough. She'll get there though and be much happier overall. Left Hug

Thank you so much! I might have to try the lovey in my shirt :) She did ok one night and now is back to waking up all the time and wanting to hold my hand the whole time. I did try a lovey but she wont' have it. So maybe if I have it smell like me it will help. :)

  • I'm going though the same thing with Elijah.. although he's NEVER sttn, he's actually sleeping worse. Up every 2 hours and wants a bottle every single time. He refuses a Paci, putting rice in his bottle doesn't help, even sleeping with me doesn't work! Idk what else.to do, so I definitely feel your pain. :

  • don't take it in any type of way but mommy u baby her a little much. i would just let her cry so she understands she doesn't always need you just to sleep because it sounds like you are not getting any sleep either. sometimes you just got to let it go now with her teething idk because mine is not in deep pain because i catch it before it gets there i normal give a ice teething ring play music or cuddle with her until she falls asleep.
