Belly sleeping

Is this still a concern for other mothers? I know they say lay them on their back and if they flip on their own it's ok but my LO screams when I lay him on his back. If I put him on his stomach and pat his back he will fall asleep. I have never let him sleep this way though and after almost 7 1/2 of both of us not sleeping well at night I'm considering just putting him on his belly from now on. I was just curious how others LO's were sleeping at this age.

Re: Belly sleeping

  • My DD immediately flips to her belly the second I lay her down, and I let her sleep that way. It's been that way for around 2 months now, and ever since she switched to belly sleeping, her sleep has been a ton better. I think as long as your LO can flip on his own, it's totally fine. Their neck control at this age is good so he should be able to move if necessary.

  • I put DD on her back, but she never stays there for more than a few seconds. She has been flipping to her tummy for a few months now. Can he roll over well on his own?

  • If he can roll over on his own he's totally fine. At this age they are strong enough anyway and know to turn their heads. Our doc said it really isn't an issue anymore. I lay DD down on her back but I'll find her in all kinds of positions in the morning. Most of the time she's on her belly, face burried in her little hands. This morning the butt was up in the air, too - hilarious.

  • J flips and turns all night long. He's been a belly sleeper even since he learned to roll over. We co slept up until last month so I would watch him when he slept. We didn't move him into the crib until I felt comfortable with him sleeping on his belly.
  • I would say that if your baby can roll over back to belly and belly to back, you should just go ahead and try laying him on his tummy. I started doing this at around 5.5 months because she just would cry on her back or wake up every 20 minutes. it was too much to handle. I remember reading somewhere that sleep positioning starts becoming a non issue around 6 months, I'd say you're good! give it a shot!

  • That's all DS has done since he was 3 mos., by his own doing.  Dr. said it was fine if he rolled over himself.

  • My DD learned to roll to her tummy right when we crib transitioned at 6 months. We put her down on her back and she immediately flips. I wouldn't worry if your baby needs to be put down on their tummy. If they can roll and move around and are sleeping better on their tummy anyway it's likely fine. I was super nervous about it when she first started doing it but she sleeps best that way and I know she can move if she needs to.

  • Both the pediatrician and physical therapist said that we should be putting him to sleep on his back but if he were to flip over, we could leave him.

However, we tend to put him on his back to sleep except when he seems to be super fussy or cranky.

  • my little one has never slept on her back well even when she first came home always on the belly and idk i never felt comfortable with her on her back being that if she chocked its going right back down her throat or even spill out of her mouth and gives her a ear infection and made the inside of her ears smell funny. but at this age she sleeps how ever she wants even if she wants her foot outside the crib lol
