Cold advice

LO is coming down with his first cold. Today he had a runny nose, sneezing all day and watery eyes. No fever yet. Im a FTM and this is the first time DS will be sick so I'm a little nervous. Those of you whose LOs have had colds what kind of advice could you give me? Is there anything I could do now to prevent his cold from getting any worse? Anything will be helpful! Thanks!

Re: Cold advice

  • We always run the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom for 5 to 10 min to loosen everything up. Also, a humidifier at night time with those Vicks vapor plug ins.

  • Everything pp said, plus try to get as many fluids in as possible. DD is dealing with her first cold right now and has not been doing as much formula at every feeding so I make sure to give her a sippy with water or really watered down apple juice.

Also, I put aquaphor or vaseline under her nose- it helps prevent that area from getting chapped, red, and helps me wipe her nose a lot better because I am not irritating the nose.

  • That first cold is no fun :(  I think I was more miserable (from worry) than he was!

Just keep him comfortable...I EBF, so I just let him nurse as much as he wanted.  As others have suggested, you can offer him extra liquids in a bottle/sippy cup.

I LOVE Boogie Wipes...they're saline wipes and they don't irritate little noses like regular tissues do.  (I used some myself...I caught DS's cold, and they were really nice!!)

  • Also those saline nasal drops are wonderful. I would use them a little bit before nursing or bottles and also before bed. Vicks helps too. Our pharmacy said you can use a pea sized amount of regular Vicks on baby's chest and I put it on his feet too under socks overnight.

  • Saline drops, humidifier, lots of fluids, love and snuggles. I hope it gets better soon!

    Could it be allergies?

  • We always use the Nosefrida when DS is sick. It's this fabulous little device that literally "sucks" the snot out of their nose. Sounds totally disgusting, but it really works great and gives them lots of relief. Here's a link to it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Nosefrida-The-Snotsucker-Nasal-Aspirator/dp/B00171WXII/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1348497386&sr=1-1&keywords=nosefrida

I was a total sceptic of this but when DS got sick for the first time and I saw the awesome reviews on Amazon I gave it a shot and it really does work great. Only warning, my son HATED it at first. Now he doesn't mind it at all, but in the beginning he really hated it, but it always helped him breath so it was worth it.

  • I get so worried when DD gets sick too.  She's finally getting over her cold now so my stress level has gone down.  There's not a whole lot you can do but make your LO comfortable.  This cold was particularly nasty because she had such a stuffy nose that she had a hard time sleeping because she couldn't breathe out of her nose.  We did a lot of suctioning (torture!) of her nose, Vicks on her chest and nose, and a humidifier.  She won't sleep in her swing anymore, which is what I did last time she was sick, and someone suggested putting a pillow under one side of her mattress to help her sleep slightly more upright.  I think that was one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received.  I didn't want to put something in her crib so it was perfect and helped her sleep much better.  As far as helping it not get any worse, I have yet to figure that out.  With them being so little, all you can do is let it run it's course and give out plenty of hugs and kisses. Hang in there mama!
