Advice on giving meds?

Athena has taken Prilosec since she was about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks old. She hasn't really fought us giving it to her in the syringe until about 2 weeks ago. Now she is on Amoxicillin, so we are giving her Prilosec twice a day, the antibiotic 4 times a day, and baby Advil as needed... and the way she screams whenever it's time to take medicine breaks my heart. Any advice on what to do for her? Has anyone had a similar situation?? I've shown her the syringes before I try and give it to her, and let her touch it to see it's nothing scary - but that doesn't seem to work. We're at wits end!

ETA: Fixed spelling of advice in the subject. It was driving me bananas.

Re: Advice on giving meds?

  • Are you bottle feeding?  Can you put it in a bottle?

I don't know if that's an OK thing to do or what.

  • I found a pavifier that has a hole in it to dispense medicine. I haven't tried it but it looks like it would work in theory.

I got it at target or bru with a thermometer also a pacifier
  • I put the Prilosec in the bottle a few times. After a couple times, she wouldn't take the bottle. I know the stuff doesn't taste so good, so maybe that's why? And she hates pacifiers - but maybe I can try that anyway. Thanks ladies!!

  • E is on prilosec too. She won't take it from the syringe either. I put it in a bottle with 1 oz diluted prune juice. Gives it a better flavor I suppose and she's a little constipated without the little bit of juice everyday.

  • We tried solids a few weeks ago, I think we might give it another go this week, and that's a good idea! I also didn't think of diluting it with juice. I'm going to try each of these things until something works! Thanks so much for the advice! (Maybe I could have spelled that word correctly in the subject, too!)

  • Could the pharmacist add flavoring to the Prilosec? That might make it taste a little better.

  • When you give her the syringe, do you put it in the middle of her mouth or in her cheek? The only way we could get DD to take meds was to put it in the inside of her cheek, pretty far back. She still hated it, but she had not choice but to swallow it.

I have tried this a few times and she will not swallow it!  The last time I tried, she choked and scared the crap out of me....not going to try that again for awhile.
