Side/Hip Pain While Sleeping

I'm a stomach sleeper, so the past 3 1/2 months have been tough for me. I wake up every morning with very severe pain in my sides, mainly in my hip and upper thigh. A couple times a night I flip over, hoping to relieve the pain, but instead that just makes both sides hurt.

Anyone have any suggestions? For the past 2ish months I've been sleeping with a body pillow (to make it feel like I was sleeping on my stomach), but last night I tried sleeping with it pushed all the way down at the end of the bed, between my legs lengthwise. This helped a little and I actually slept through the night, but I still woke up with pain in one side.

Re: Side/Hip Pain While Sleeping

  • Im a stomach and side sleeper- have always switched between the 2. I never had this hip/side of back pain until recently, but putting a pillow between my legs helped so much! I usually place it between my knees. It hasn't completely helped the hip pain, but my left hip has been hurting regularly, not only when I sleep. Hope this helps a little.

  • When I have hip problems, usually my right hip, I go see my chiropracter! Your body is changing and so you might be out of line. I usually sleep on my belly so this is tough for me and also I had side ache also, but my doctor said that it might be a muscle spasm. when you have a side pain try rubbing it to see if that helps the pain go away if it does then its just a spasm. Hope this helps!

  • I thought I was the only one experiencing this weirdness!!!

I usually sleep on my back or my stomach. But the fact that now I can either sleep on my side, or my other side I get really restless. I go back and forth alot during the night switching sides. Its more like a constant switching. If I sleep for too long on one side, my hips and upper thighs will start hurting so bad on that side. It doesn't feel good at all. I've been telling my hubby we need to get a body pillow to help me at night. But I am going to try the whole pillow between the knees thing and see if that helps. I know exactly how you feel. I hope it gets better for you!

This describes nights in my house perfectly! I keep waking DH up being I keep flipping myself over! The body pillow really helps! (and is a lot cheaper than a snoogle). I'm going to try a normal sized pillow just between my knees tonight and see how that works :) Thanks!
