Low Carb Fast Food/Takeout?

Just wondering what you diabetic mommies get when you're craving fast food, if anything?  The things I've found don't affect my blood sugar too much (that I crave CONSTANTLY) are the crunchy chicken tacos from Jimboy's and a few slices of the "Delite" pizza from Papa Murphy's.  I try to eat really healthy and make homecooked meals every night, but hey, I AM pregnant and sometimes I just crave things! I'd kill for some peanut butter chocolate ice cream though! Confused

Anyone else have any go-to foods that don't shoot up their levels?

Subway, though not really Fast food, sits well with my BS. I usually get turkey + jack on wheat, with looooooooads of jalapenos :D. Cheese Enchiladas from the Mexican joint do as well. And Chicken Soft tacos from Del Taco too.

That all sounds great! I haven't even thought to try Subway, I just assumed the bread would do me in! I just looked up the nutritional info, it IS doable! Thanks for the tip, I miss sandwiches. Big Smile

  • Cheeseburgers from Wendys.  I have also been getting tacos from Dairy Queen with a ton of salsa and I do ok with them too. I normally am not a fan of either of these items and I behave 95% of the time and my BS has been really good and I know I am lucky that I have controlled mine through diet but that other 5% of the time calls for tacos or a cheeseburger.

Oh man, I haven't attempted a burger yet, but I'm dying for one! My problem is I NEED fries with a burger, and from what I've discovered so far, potatoes don't sit well with my blood sugar. Sad

I could never go without bread. Pretty sure my body would die off. :p

I get 30g per meal, 15 for snacks, but I've found a lot of breads have around 17-19g per slice, but i'll still have two at meals and be okay. Actually I just picked up some cinnamon raisin bread thats 18g a slice and I about jumped for joy in the middle of the store. And doubly so when I checked my BS after breakfast ( I had two of the raisin bread slices + pb) and it was 120. (Under the 130 I'm suppose to be). WIN.

The sweet success place I was going to would yell at me when I had subway because the "mass amounts of carbs" in their bread. Pft. My OB said go for it so POO POO on you lady. Haha

That cinnamon raisin bread sounds amazing right now!

  • I only just started my diet a few weeks ago, but I always get good readings after eating bread/pasta if it has a ton of fiber in it. I know that has something to do with "net carbs", but Sweet Success hasn't explained that to me, I'm just learning fiber is good for my blood sugar, apparently! I do know when I eat something that's not wheat (like white flour tortillas or bread), my blood sugar is not happy!

What about sweet potato fries? Carls JR just came out with those, they're pretty tasty...I mean, they're not McD's fry but hey..they'll do? lol

I LOVE sweet potato fries! I just looked up the carb content for the Carl's Jr ones, they have 20g MORE carbs than their normal fries! Sad

Thanks for the tip! I'm not familiar with managing my diet through diabetic exchange (just carb counting), but I plan to ask about it at my next Sweet Success appointment.  I actually had Taco Bell for lunch today, but I guess I didn't choose wisely, my numbers were not great.

15 carbs 1 starch. They have theirs listed in terms of starches, so it's pretty easy to figure out.

  • I have been able to indulge in a 6" Turkey sub on wheat bread from Subway. This is such a blessing for me (as I see many of the PPs can't do Subway) because I can load up with a lot of spinach and other veggies. Plus, I have had a "thing" for banana peppers and tubs of mustard... Embarrassed Alas, I felt very "safe" eating these because they didn't mess with my readings so I was pretty much eating them for lunch every work day and now I'm burnt out on them. Crying

I went today to ChikFilA (I've never been a fan... I don't like their sandwiches and I think they are too too pricey, especially for the amount of food you get. /mini rant) and got their 8 pc chicken nuggets: 11g carbs, 28g protein. I got the small order of fries: 37g of carbs. I was cognizant of the high carbs there, so I acted "picky" and only ate the ones that "looked realllllllly good". Plus, I got one of their side salads, which are surprisingly good. I laughed at the lone piece of broccoli in there. Big Smile Anyway, 2hrs later, my reading was 101! (Which was so great to see!! I had a horrible day yesterday...) Sidenote: I was surprised that they had Caffeine free Diet Coke there and I scooped me up one of those too! So CFA gets an A+ in my book today! Yes

I think Taco Bueno is a Texas only chain (maybe?),  but I go there and get three of their Party (crispy) Tacos: 5g of carbs, 7g protein (per taco).

  • I've done burgers w/ no bun from Wendy's, Burger King and Red Robin. I've had a 6 inch turkey sub on flat bread from Subway. A 5 piece chicken nugget from Wendy's is 15 carbs. I usually get a ceasar salad too, ceasar dressing seems to have a lower carb count. Lots of restaurants have their nutrition info on their sites even where you can take things off their sandwiches and what not. I've had breaded   shrimp from Red Lobster a few weeks ago and it didn't do anything to my sugar level. I'm a diet controlled GD.

Have you tried the "Delite" pizza from Papa Murphy's? It's super thin crust (almost cracker thin). I still don't eat the end crusts, just to be safe so I can have an extra slice, but I haven't had a bad reading yet from eatng a few slices. Each 1/10 slice of a large is around 15g carbs depending on which toppings you have.

  • Well, my weekness almost since I got pregnant has been McDonald's Chicken nuggets. You can get the nutritional facts on all the carbs/fat/calories and anything else you may be watching. It tends to work well for my bs in that the carbs are realitively low with the protien being higher and helping keep me full.
