Dilation - Does it hurt?

This may sound like a very odd question, but Im a ftm so thought I would ask.

I am 38 and 2 days and have not been checked for dilation or effacement by my doctor. I wasn't expecting to and am glad I haven't, minimally invasive is my proffered route.

I ask whether dilation hurts however, because I have been experiencing contractions pretty consistently this entire morning, a lot of the pain I have been getting is period like cramping to the point that only standing is comfortable.

Is this just part and parcel of the contraction side of things, or ALSO part of the dilation?

Re: Dilation - Does it hurt?

  • Dilation itself doesn't hurt but contraction which often cause dilation do hurt.

  • It would seem as though this is based on an individuals body. Typically, contractions are what cause the cervix to dilate so I would say yes, that it hurts to dilate. Then again, there are women who find out at 37 weeks they are 4 cm and didn't even realize it. So, I don't think the actual act of dilation hurts as much as the contractions that can cause it.

  • Thanks for the heads up queenie! I wonder if that's whats going down, because with every contraction and cramp today I feel like someone is kicking me in the cervix and my butt... lol

*Im also partly unsure whether this is early labor, all I know is that its now 4:30 and i've been consistently contracting since about 11am... we'll see I guess!

  • For me, with DD1 I really found that until I hit the transition phase where you tend to dilate much more quickly, the contractions were strong but very manageable. I agree with PP that it is the contractions you feel and not actual dilation. That being said, you can have horrid contractions with very slow dilation.

  • I am 3 cm dilated 0 at 36 weeks and had absolutely no clue except for the fact that the dr told me. But I was 3 cm for a few weeks with DD who came at 42 weeks so who knows! No guarantee. Good luck!
