manufacturers age rec on BOB's

I am looking at getting a BOB, however the manufacturer says that the age recommendation is 8 months for running and not to use the carseat carrier for running at all. My son is 4.5 mo and I don't like the idea of waiting until he is 8 mo to take him running with me. I kind of feel like this might be a little extreme. My son does have pretty good head control and can sit assisted for quite some time. What are others doing/using?

Thanks!

Re: manufacturers age rec on BOB's

  • Our pedi told us no running at all until LO was at least 9-10 months because it was too hard on their necks- even if they can hold their heads up, the strength isn't really there.

Sorry- I was bummed when I found out, too.  I had all these visions of jogging off the baby weight with my newborn.

  • Funny, I was just looking on this board and getting ready to post this question! I'm super bummed about this too and was wondering if anyone runs with them younger than 8mos and why you have to wait that long. I see people running all the time with younger babies.

  • I ran with both kids starting at a pretty young age. I used the car seat adapter and stuck to paved, even trails. Honestly, when in the car seat the jostling they experience isn't much different to what they experience in the car.

My guess is BOB says not to run with the adapter due to liability reasons, but it never felt wobbly or top heavy to me. If you havea  stroller where the front wheel swivels or locks I would make sure to keep your front wheel locked.

  • I agree with the pp. I started walking/jogging when DD was 3-4 months old. I kept her in the carseat in the BOB until she was 8 months old. I always ran on an even trail and it was no more jostling around in that than they experience in the car. Plus, with the carseat and adapter, they are a little more reclined than in the car. She never seemed like her head was unsupported and she loved running with me. At almost 2 years old, she still loves to go running.
  • Oh, and I ran 5 or 6 5k races with her in the car seat. I never felt like it was top heavy or unstable. I also never locked the front wheel. Maybe I should have, but the thing is so smooth and the front wheel has never been wobbly.

I saw this "adapter" at REI yesterday. I took DH on a stroll through the dept to just look at what they sold there (even though I would like to try to find a used one) and saw the one that had the carseat setup. I was like "oh look at this..its only $400 already set up!"

HAHA. NOT. $755!! The bob was 400, the seat was 300 and the adapter was 55. Whoa. I think we will be taking turns on runs so someone can stay at home and watch baby!

By "the seat was 300", do you mean car seat? BOB doesn't have its own special seat you need to buy. You can use it with most infant (bucket) car seats.

  • yeah it was whatever car seat that they had set up. Good...I was hoping it was compatible with any car seat and not just that particular model!
