Good idea or no? Cupcake decorating party for 4 yr old boy

Thinking of having this type of party at a local cake shop. Does this sound like a good idea? Not sure if it would be too difficult/messy with icing, etc.. or if the kids would be into it. It would be a mixed group of 15 boys/girls

  • What would they do after?  I'd be afraid they'd run wild after the activity was over.  Can you do something similar at your home?  Also, I'd be worried about food allergy kids.

  • I was thinking the only way I'd consider it was NOT at my house. :) Opposite opinion.

  • Hmmm....I think all kids like to decorate cupcakes, but I would wonder how they have it planned out at the decorating place.  Any other activities?  How long are you scheduled for the party there?  Those kinds of things.

15 kids + sugar + activity with food colouring = not at my house

I wouldn't do this with so many kids.  My boys would not handle staying on task for any period of time in that setting with that many kids.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I did it at my son's 3rd birthday party.  We had the party at Gymboree but I wasn't going to spend a ton of money on their pizza package.  They told me I could bring a cake/cupcakes only.  I wanted to make it a little more fun than "here's your cake, take your goody bag and goodbye".  So I decorated some for anyone who didn't want to participate and I let the kids decorate the rest.  The whole thing only lasted about 15 minutes before the kids devoured the cupcakes.

They had a blast decorating the cupcakes.  Boys and girls alike.  I agree about not having it at your house- it definitely made a mess.  But it was all on a table cloth and we just threw the whole thing away after.  I put sprinkles and all the other toppings in little bowls so it was right in front of each kid.  The icing was the hardest part but the parents helped out the kids.  I also did little fondant cut outs of animals (mine was a jungle theme) and the kids loved those as well.

The one thing I learned is that you don't need a lot of each thing.  You just need a lot of different things - the kids wanted EVERYTHING on their cupcake!

have fun- I have great pictures from them making the mess!

  • we went to a party for a 3 year old, and everyone got mini cupcakes and there were lots of candy and icing, and the kids decorated their cupcakes and had it with lunch.  But the whole thing lasted maybe 10 minutes. that was only one little piece of the party.  there were tons of other games and things for the kids to do.

I don't see how you can make an entire party out of that.

  • We just went to a 4 yo party where they did that. It was OK, but honestly, seemed like a lot of organizational planning for the mom who did it (and them moms and grandmas that had to help the kids decorate) and honestly, the kids would have been just as happy playing.

We went to another  party this weekend where they did a little craft - making bead necklaces but it took like 5-10 minutes; that seemed OK to me, even thought again, the parents ended up having to do a good bit of the tieing, etc.
