water/milk intake

DS is not a big drinker, unless I hand him the sippy, he doesnt always initiate drinking himself.

Does anyone else have any tricks to get your LO to drink more fluids?  I'm starting to worry he doesnt get enough (he is wetting diapers and I am trying to push fruits/veg with high water content), but wish there was a way to encourage him to drink more.

Re: water/milk intake

  • Gabe gets milk at B, L and D and water during his 2-3 snacks.  We also offer milk before bed (which he usually refuses).  If he is having a good amount of wet diapers I wouldn't worry about it.

Some days Gabe drinks 15-20oz of milk.  Some days he drinks like 8oz.  Some days he is super into his water during snack.  Other times, not so much.

  • Unfortunately, I don't have any advice. But we are right there with you. We try so hard at every meal to give her something to drink, and in between meals as well, but she usually just takes maybe 2-3 sips and throws the cup on the floor. When we pick it up, she just tosses it again.  The one time I can get her to drink is in the car. Obviously, we can't do milk, but she loves drinking water from her sippy in the car- sometimes she will drink the whole thing in one short ride. I think it is partially because she has nothing else to do, so she actually pays attention to the fact that she is thirsty.
  • I'm probably going down in flames but my LO gets her milk at nap and bedtime. She has nothing else to do or be busy with, so she'll sit in her crib and drink it. Works for us.

The rest of the day she gets water (she kind of hates milk, so I never pushed it and we fell into this pattern). I let her have water in a sippy all day. She drags it around, stops for a sip, sees it on the counter whines for it.

Sometimes if I know she hasn't had enough (like on hot days, we were busy, forgot the sippy). I will put like an oz of juice in her sippy and fill the rest with water. She thinks it's the greatest treat ever. (Flame me, it's a pretty rare occurrence here, I'm pretty sure I'm not contributing to childhood obesity. ;) ).

However, to be fair, Her sippy is her lovey. She needs it like some kids need a blanket. Again, whatever..super easy to drag around and replace. Oh and she will suck anything out of a straw.

No flaming here.  I've given juice the same way.  Do what works ;-)
