I don't think there is a set time frame in which you need to do this, though personally I wouldn't wait more than two months. We are due on December 11th...and plan on doing a combination Birth/Christmas or Birth/New Year card featuring our new little one! It depends on when he actually arrives and how quick I can get one together

This. We're hoping to do a holiday card/birth announcement to avoid having to do addressing (and pay for stamps) twice. Hopefully it will be out before January 1st...
Baby is due 12-26 - really thinking I may go early, though. My step-daughters will be here sometime after Christmas, around the 27th - so we're going to do newborn pictures, first family pictures and send out new years cards/birth announcements.
I did an internet search on this last week and the sources, including some etiquette sites, said that anytime before 6 months is appropriate/acceptable. I hope to get mine out within 3 months of birth.

This, too. I'm hoping that I'm not getting my hopes up that I'll have enough time and ambition to get something like this out in time.. but I figure if I have a card all made up (minus pictures!) and envelopes all addressed and stamped.. then it shouldn't be too tough to get them printed and put in the mailbox.
