BF moms, what do you eat in a day?

I know when you are BF you're supposed to have a couple hundred extra calories a day, but I'm finding it so hard to find time to eat. I SAH and EBF and am good at drinking lots of water, but eating is another story. DS is a terrible napper so I can't rely on eating when he naps, since often the only way he'll nap is on me or in the carrier while walking around. It's almost dinner time here and all I've eaten today is some toast, a banana, some carrots with hummus, and two granola bars. I do eat a good full dinner every night, but I find it so hard to eat during the day. How is eating going for other BF moms?

Re: BF moms, what do you eat in a day?

  • I am SO hungry all day! I eat 2 pieces of toast for breakfast, a piece of fruit between breakfast and lunch, usually soup or a sandwich or a bit of pasta for lunch, and a HUGE supper. Last night I ate a full rack of ribs, a cup of rice, and 2 corn cobs. I also have tons of snacks.

I feel like I am probably eating WAY more than 500 calories extra a day. But if you are not hungry maybe you don't need way more? I think as long as you eat breakfast lunch and supper, at least something, you will be ok.

  • I eat a ton! I am starving all day and in the middle of the night when I wake up to feed my LO. I usually eat cereal at the early wake up, like 5/6am, then eggs a few hours later, then lunch, then a huge dinner with a whole bunch of snacks throughout the day and middle of the night. I am eating less during the day since I went back to work part time 2 weeks ago but still. I am trying to eat fulfilling foods to limit how often I eat. I am more hungry now then when I was pregnant. I am also drinking tons of water. I have a hard time falling back to sleep in the middle of the night unless I eat. I told my husband the other day that I need to eat a steak at 3am. I am jealous that you aren't that hungry!

  • I make sandwiches and leave them ready the night before. I also set up snacks by my rocking chair to eat while BFing.

My LO also naps on me, so I get all my snacks ready before hand. DH has been cooking, now that we ran out of frozen meals. He makes my plate and fetches me food Stick out tongue

  • I'm hungry all the time as well.

A typical day for me looks something like this:

B: two pieces of toast with a hard boiled egg, milk

S: fruit of some kind (usually berries and/or a banana), tea

L: sandwich or soup and a chop salad, diet soda

    S: crackers, cheese, yogurt, tea

D: protein, carb, veg and salad, milk

    S: frozen yogurt and berries

I often find myself making a PB&J sandwich in the middle of the night as well.

  • I actually get pretty hungry during the day too...I just have trouble finding time to prepare healthy things! I find myself reaching for convenience foods, like store bought muffins (finally got around to reading the nutritional information and the first ingredient listed was sugar...not a good sign!). After DS goes to bed I end up eating a sandwich or a whole box of crackers or whatever I can find, which fills me up but I don't think it's good for metabolism to be eating so much in the evening. I'm going to have to make an effort to try and set aside a time every few hours to put DS down and get something healthy and filling to eat.

  • I'm terrible. I'm a SAHM with a 3.5 year old plus the baby. If I'm lucky, I'll have a mug of tea/coffee first thing and then a bowl of raisin bran for breakfast. Then usually nothing until lunch at 12 when I'll have soup or a sandwich. Sometimes cheese on toast. Then maybe I'll have another bowl of cereal late in the afternoon. I do try to eat a good dinner though. Pasta or potatoes with some sort of meat and a vegetable. I rely a lot on caffeine and sugar though. :(

  • I need to work on getting enough water..Its so hard to get up and get water when LO is either sleeping on you, nursing, or you are exhausted yourself and can't even get out of bed when LO finally is asleep.

My meals usually look like this.

    B- Yogurt and granola

    S- Pretzels and hummus

L- chicken salad sandwich/ turkey and cheese  or some kind of sandwich

    S- fruit or yogurt

    Dinner- protein, veg and carb

Desert-whatever I feel like....sometimes even chocolate or cookies, or ice cream

  • I am pretty much hungry all the time. And sooo thirsty. I think I drink a gallon of water a day. I try to just eat like I did while pregnant, just grazing throughout the day. A typical day would be:

6am: 2 packs of instant oatmeal

    8:30 am: hard boiled egg

    9:30 am: turkey sandwhich

    10:30: granola & dried fruit

11:30: piece of fruit, usually banana or apple

    1:00pm: soup & brown rice

    3:00pm: granola bar

4:30pm: trail mix with almonds, sesame seeds & dried cranberries

6:00pm: spinach salad, maybe some pasta

    7:30, ice cream or cookies

Now that I've actually looked at everything I eat, no wonder I still have 12 lbs to lose!

  • I eat the most unhealthy crap all day long and I drink a lot of soda and coffee I drink a lot of water too so I don't feel to guilty. I have 4 kids, a SAHM, and my life is nonstop on the go so I reach for a lot of convenience foods. Plus Avery isn't cooperative at all, she's a very high needs baby, so I just down crap really fast all day long so I can keep up with her. My boobs work very well and I have a great supply, so I guess the crap doesn't affect me too much... besides my weight.
