Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I need HELP! Daycare Questions (vent/rant)

I really need some help wrapping my head around daycare. My DS has attended since he was 6 months old. Now that he's 13 months, he is in the toddler room. We really had no major problems until he moved into the toddler room in August.

I understand that a permission slip is required to apply medications (i.e. Desitin). I have no problem with that. But the fact that the daycare workers decided on their own that DS needs Vaseline not diaper cream. What? The instructions were clear apply diaper cream.

We (DH & I) have had to sign 3 or 4 Accident Report Forms for "stupid" things. For example the latest one says that our DS was walking when he tripped and fell down and bumped his forehead. He had a small bruise on his forehead & they applied ice. Really we have to sign something for that? He's 13 months old. He's going to fall down!

On the same day DS comes home with a raging diaper rash. NO ONE at the daycare mentioned that to DH when DS was picked up. On top of that the daycare worked stated that DS had been bitten by another kid on the right arm. I noticed this BIG bright red bite mark on his left arm. Really! You missed that! There was no accident report for him being bitten.

I'm really just over it. Do you think I'm overreacting? TIA for suggestions, advice, etc.

  • So...you want an accident report or you don't want an accident report?

I'm surprised they didn't give you one for the bite, but not suprised they gave you one for the bruise. Our DC has to give an incident report for anything that requires medical attention, including ice. Makes sense - if you got home and saw the bruise with no explanation, you'd probably be concerned.

This. They are required by law to write up every scrape, bruise, etc. If a parents were to NOT have it on file and tried to sue, they could because the daycare wouldn't have anything on file for treatment, the accident occurring, and your knowledge of it. Makes total sense to me. I guess they forgot about the bite one b/c they only have a million other things to do that day (not that it makes it OK).

And no, you normally don't write up for a diaper rash. I think they would assume that you would know about it beforehand if it really was that bad.

I would mention the vaseline nicely and ask that they keep using the cream instead.

  • I used to work at a DCC.  It is a law that anything witnessed is supposed to be written up.  They obviously have biters in your sons class.  I'd be pissed, too, about that.  My son came home from DC once with a bite mark on his ribs and no one even mentioned it to me.  He had teeth marks and everything, so I was livid.  I understand how frustrated you are.

And the diaper rash...I'd be SO mad.  I watch kids out of my house now and only do what the parents tell me to do.  I'd be so mad.

I would have a serious talk with the teachers and the director and just say hey, you obviously have biters in here, watch for them more closely.  And don't ever apply anything to anyone's child without the parents permission.  GL

  • Just a note on diaper rash...when DD went to daycare, she would go in the a.m. with no problems and come home with horrible diaper rash. I thought maybe she just had really sensitive skin. But, ever since we switched to a nanny, ZERO problems...and no problems yet on her little brother. I feel so bad now that I assumed the diaper rash was something that just happens.

I would be really annoyed by the incidents they are MISSING. I'd be fine w/ signign reports for minor things.

We also had two incidents of bite marks with NO report and no word that anyone even saw it, plus a big purple goose-egg on DD's head that no one reported (saw it right after I took her home, when I brushed her hair to the side).  I was not happy.

  • Like everyone said - Incident reports for everything. Just the way it is.

The missed bite? Was this the first time? If so, I would just mention it to the teacher. Just say you noticed he had a bite, and that you just wanted to mention it so they are aware and can keep a closer eye. Not the first time? I would bring it up to the director, who can hopefully have the teachers keep a more watchful eye.

The vaseline? Again, is it the first time? If so politely mention it to the teacher. Tell them you really need the Desitin put on there and not the vaseline. I wouldn't be rude or harsh if it has only happened once. Does your daycare send home daily reports about diaper changes, naps, and the happenings of the day? Typically, our DC does diapers three times a day (of course an extra changes if there is a poo). If DD has a rash, I communicate to them that I need her to have as many changes as they can, and they usually come through for me. I would try the same if I were you.
