Please help - abnormal NT

Hello ladies,
I just received news that my NT scan and blood work results puts me at a risk of 1:5. My OB told me the risk was for Down's Syndrome, but I am not sure if results are this specific, or if it would be a risk for any chromosomal abnormality.  The office made an appointment for me to be seen by a perinatologist tomorrow for possible CVS.  Does anyone have any experience with this type of appointment and what to expect?  Do they proceed with the CVS at the first appointment?  I am scared and sad.

Thank you.

  • I don't have any advice or experience but I am sorry you are going through this and I hope that everything turns out okay.  I think that those tests are known for false "positives" and more than likely your baby is just fine:)

  • Yes it's specific. They check for the major trisomies 21, 18, 13, etc. I had 1 in 9 for t18 last preg. I saw a genetics counselor and was scheduled for an amnio. Sadly we found out we lost the baby during the u/s prior to amnio. I understand your what you are going through right now, but don't give up hope. There is still a chance baby is just fine. Lots of hugs, hope you get answers soon.

  • I went straight to the cvs rather than do the nt.   please know that the test is very easy, if feels no worse than a pap test.  It was so much less invasive and uncomfortable than a previous amnio.  The odds are in your favor for a good outcome!  Preliminary results shoud come within a day or 2.   Good luck, I am sorry you have this scare.  I had a down syndrome scare in my last pregnancy, but all was fine!

  • I don't have any experience with CVS but wanted to wish you good luck and hope that everything is ok.

  • I have everything crossed that you'll have a good outcome to this! My advice would be to ask if they'll do the cvs via transabdominal, transvaginal is higher risk and I wish I had that information before having it done. You can get the results very quickly, I had mine within 24 hrs.

  • I had a cvs and although it does carry some risk of miscarriage (rate depends on your specific dr), it was well worth it to me just to know with certainty. Where they choose to take the sample (vaginally or abdominally) is dependent on the baby's position. Mine was through the abdomen and it was a few seconds of mild discomfort.  My mfm center does not do any preliminary test reporting, so we received the results in about 5 business days. Good luck!

  • I'm in the same boat in that my MaterniT21 results came back positive for downs.  I had my amnio yesterday.  I'll be praying for your situation and wish you the best!!

  • I'm sorry to read this news. NT results are just a odds test, and despite those odds, they are still in your favour. I have no experience with CVS, but I hope that they do the procedure sooner, rather than later and that the results are available quickly and come out in your favour. ((HUGS)). Please update when you are able.

  • At my hospital, the risks are the same no matter how they do it.  You aren't offered an option as to how try do it...they select the approach based on where the placenta is.  I know it is scary, but my procedure went smoothly with no complications.
  • (((Thinking of you))).  CVS or amnio is scary, but it is definitive.  I have no experience as this is my first pregnancy, but we are keeping the option open to have this done in the next couple weeks. You have our support!!!

  • I'm a newbie to this whole pregnancy thing, but I am sending positive vibes your way. I did read on another board about someone who was given 1:2 odds of Down's (!) following NT but had a perfectly healthy baby. Praying it comes out that way for you too.

And Orange, I wish you strength and courage and hope that the amnio will show the MT21 test was a false positive.
