Got green light to start cereal

So our ped told us to start cereal with our LO since his appetite is that of a 9 month old.  I forgot to ask our ped, but does the cereal replace a bottle feeding?  Or is in addition?  Do I wait until LO is hungry and try the cereal?  Usually when he is full, he is full and won't let anything in his mouth.  I thought about giving him half a bottle and then give the cereal, but he kinda gets mad when you take his bottle away.

  • You always feed milk first, food at this age is for practice. It does not replace a meal it is to learn how to take food from a spoon at first. Rice only fills their stomachs it has very little nutrients in it.

  • We put 1 Tbsp of brown rice cereal in their bottles because if we don't they are hungry every 1.5-2 hours.  I didn't like the idea of it but when we tried upping the formula to 6oz (from 5oz) they just spit it all up.  Anyway, when they turned 4 months old we started adding 1 Tbsp of rice cereal in a bowl to their eating routine 2x a day after their bottles.  That was just for practice eating off the spoon.  Now that they have the hang of it we are starting veggies next week.

  • We do two small snacks with oatmeal and/or fruit in the am and a veggie in the PM.  Since we have no issues with food allergies in our history and DD has no stomach issues, I am being way more liberal with how foods are introduced (compared to how I was with DS three years ago!)
  • Thanks ladies.  So we did the oatmeal for dinner, I can see how it would be so much easier to put in his bottle, lol.

The whole idea of solids is to teach them to eat from a spoon, putting cereal in bottles is a bad idea unless directed my a dr for reflux.
