3rd Trimester

Crazy Question

For those who don't know, I have been on bedrest since 20 weeks. My doc says he will lift some of my restrictions at 34 weeks.

I used to be the girl who got a Brazilian every month. I always scheduled a month in advance with the same woman and we have an awesome relationship because I've been going there for years. However, I am not on bed rest and the last time I went which was in July, it was soooooo painful.

I do want to get waxed before I go into labor because I can't stand the thought of there being sooooooo much going on down there. I just don't know when is the right time to go. I hit 37 weeks on a Saturday and I am contemplating going that Friday just in case the pain throws me into labor, which is probably a silly thought but you never know. Any thoughts? Anyone who got waxed very close to delivery date?

So, I'm not going to explain my entire pregnancy and everything I've been through and everything I've had to do and am doing to keep my baby cooking. But I will say this, I have adhered to EVERYTHING my doctors have required or suggested of me. And it just so happens that my doctor thinks at 34 weeks I will be able to resume fairly normal activity like leaving the house for something other than doctor's appointments, getting my hair done, etc. So don't talk to me about my priorities. It's judgmental and you're wrong. And if you couldn't answer my question, then you didn't need to reply.

I know this is a public forum and if you put stuff out there people can say and think whatever they want. But i really believe, if you have nothing to say then don't anything.

  • I've never heard of waxing pain (or any pain) pushing anyone into labor...but since you've got extra bloodflow down there while pregnant I bet it would hurt more than "normal."

For me, I figure they'll have seen far worse than anything I have going on down there and I really don't care (since I haven't been able to see to properly trim in weeks).  It's not a vagina beauty contest, it's birth.  It's not going to be pretty no matter how waxed you are.

  • As a fellow bed rest and PTL mommy, I think keeping that baby cooking for a couple more weeks is well worth that extra hair down there. 37 weeks might be considered term, but after worrying about having a preemie baby for so long, I would want to keep that baby in as long as possible. They see so many hairy vaginas every day anyways. I doubtnthey even think twice about it, and it's nothing to be ashamed of! Plenty of post-partum waxes await you, mama. :)

  • thanks ladies. it's not really about being pretty. i wax because i get in-grown hairs and a lot of hair down there is just uncomfortable for me. to spare you any visuals, i will jus say I am normally a very hairy girl and being pregnant has made my hair thicker and coarser, etc. So it is extremely uncomfortable for me. it's even uncomfortable for me with all the t/v scans I have to get now. but thanks anyway ladies.

Girl, I feel you. I was "blessed" with my father's thick, dark hair. I get those in-grown hairs too. See if you can hold out as long as possible, maybe closer to 39 weeks. ((hairy hugs))

  • why don't you wait until 34 weeks and see what the doctor says about lifting your restrictions then make a decision.  I agree that waiting until at least 37 weeks is your best bet, provided your bed rest has been somewhat lifted.

I've never heard of pain putting a woman into labor, except in instances of huge trauma like a car accident etc.

I've been shaving blind for the past few months, its a nightmare. I wish I was brave enough to get a wax.

  • I'm silly like you too!  Don't feel bad...I'm just grooming with a little machine and mowing the lawn with that..that's enough..no need to kill yourself!
  • I honestly think this would hurt too much to even try it. I can't get my lip waxed anymore; I have to use one of those facial shaver things. I can barely pluck my eyebrows without crying. I can't even imagine what it would feel like down there...the thought frightens me...lol I'd say your best bet is to get your hubby to help you trim (not shave esp. if you get ingrown hairs) to keep oils and sweating, etc. to a minimum if that really troubles you.

  • I have the same thick hair and ingrown hair problems. I am just using a trimmer every couple days and keeping it as short as possible for now. It hurts way too much to get waxed while pregnant. At least for me. With DS, I had to have DH start helping me trim towards the end.

  • I believe every woman has the right to do what is right for her and her baby. As an IC mom on bed rest, I get it. Going to doc appointments are a high point for me since I stay in bed all day. I'm looking forward to going to the spa to get waxed, hair shampooed, and a facial in week 36.
  • I don't have much to add, but FWIW, I don't think your priorities are messed up just because you're trying to figure out the best time to get a wax. Jeez...I personally see much more messed up questions on here all the time!

  • You shouldn't get waxed this close to delivery.  It opens the pores and makes you more prone to bacterial infection.  Many of the places in my area that do bikini/brazilian waxes will not do them on women past 32w for this reason.  If it's really bothering you, get a razor or a body hair trimmer & clean things up a little bit.

Um, I don't think that's true at all. I've never heard of that, and I have been getting Brazilian waxes my entire pregnancy, and I will continue up until my due date. I have an appointment on Tuesday at 39w4d.

For the record, my doctor has okay'd getting waxed my whole pregnancy.

This x10. I guess any of us who are still keeping things trimmed up down there have messed up priorities as well then? I'll add that to my list of things I laugh and roll my eyes at.

OP, I have no advice other than to see if your OB has any suggestions. While they have always seen much worse, I completely understand why you want to keep things 'cleaned up' down there.

  • I got waxed last week, (right at 36) and it hurt just as much as it has the last 9 months.  My salon lady is super sweet and gives a little more time for pregnant ladies so we can relax in between.  I always treat myself to a pedicure after for getting through it :-)

  • I totally feel your pain (no pun intended ;-)

I havent been waxed since I was abt 4months along and I'm dying(!!!!) at just the thought of whats going on down there. I've been trimming but that isnt the same. The only reason I havent gotten one in 3months is bc when I initially asked my dr if it was ok she said "you could but why the hell would you since that sh*t hurts"... so needless to say I've been chicken up until now.

I plan to go to the spa for a full day of me between 34 & 37 weeks not for any other reason than I want to get as close to term as possible. What I do not want is to get to the hospital and some nurse hv to shave me with one of those medical grade razors.

If this is what will make you comfortable my dear do it as long as it doesnt violate your bedrest

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and agree with this.  PP that claimed poor priorities is crazy.

I actually just opened this to see what others were saying.  I don't have a mane down there and am still planning on getting waxed before delivery.  I used to get it done frequently but haven't lately due to money being tight, but after my last delivery it is actually a priority for me.  I ended up getting partially shaved for the c/s which caused ingrown hairs when it grew back, but I still had all the hair around the opening to get matted and disgusting with the post-partum drainage that occurs.  So in addition to feeling like a failure for getting an unplanned c/s (have gotten over that now, but initially it was hard), being half shaved with ingrown hairs, being sleep deprived and feeling disgusting I also had to deal with blood and other bodily fluids getting clumped and nasty on the hair that I did have.  It was just a disgusting feeling to me that is avoidable.

The poster that said "it's not a vagina beauty contest" is right, and the staff has seen worse, but to me it's not about what I LOOK like (I really don't give a rip) it's how I FEEL that matters to me.  Wax away if you want to girlfriend!  Hopefully (for both of us) it's not too painful!!! :)

This was me :) who made the beauty contest comment--I just wanted to say that you're absolutely right, it's about what makes you feel comfortable (ok, not the best choice of words with bikini waxes, but you know what I mean).  Just wanted to clarify--that was just how I feel about it, and I've heard women worry about "OMG I can' t let people see me hairy!" when it didn't really matter to how they felt. It seems silly to put yourself through pain for others, especially medical staff!  But if it's for you, not for others?  Wax away :)  Full disclosure--I got a pedicure so my feet wouldn't be ugly because that made me feel better about life right now :)

    This!!!!!!

First off I didn't think this post would cause such a stir. And I wasn't going to respond to the original two people at first but I just felt they were being absolutely ridiculous.lol

I take progesterone suppositories vaginally every night. DSo n ow I have the normal third trimester discharge along with the extra gunk from the progesterone. If that can make me feel DISGUSTING!!! I can olny imagine what will happen on D-date. If I tear and need stitches, or had an emergency C/S like your case...

I have spent nearly three months of my feminine maintenance because either I can't go out for anything other than doctor's visits, or because I can't stand for longer than 5 minutes while in the shower. My husbands shaves my legs for me while I lay on the bed and put my leg in a basin of water.

so yeah...I appreciate all the responses ladies!!!

Um, the tearing and stitches are reason enough for wanting to be cleaned up down there.  The one who said it's not a vagine beauty contest is absolutely right, but it doesn't seem like that's why you want to get waxed.  I don't think you're crazy for wanting to be hair-free, just for wanting a wax, and that's just because I'm a big baby and hate even getting my eyebrows waxed, much less my lady areas.  But seriously, even if I have to make DH shave for me right before we go to the hospital, I want as little down there as possible that can get caught up in stitches or gooky from all the gunk that could dry on it and cause pulling.  Ooo, chills just thinking about it!

  • No one besides you gives a rats anything about what it looks like down there. I have a friend that is an L&D nurse and she said they don't notice that stuff. They DO notice how you treat the staff. Definitely not what your pubic hair looks like.

This. My doctor just this week - brought the subject up on her own - told me not to bother with waxing or even letting DH have his hand at grooming down there. She said it makes no difference to her and she doesn't see putting myself through it just for that. There is not reason to be waxed or shaved. I've been keeping trim and will continue to, if I can. Other than that, it's pretty much the LAST thing I'm concerned about.

  • I have never heard of waxing pain throwing you into labour, but you never know, everyone is different. However, I would say, do it whenever you feel like it and hope for the best. We all do this all the time, right?

Also, ignore these judgmental Aholes and do what makes you feel good. Your mental well being is very important right now and you should try and pamper yourself a bit before the big event.
  • I haven't been on bed rest, but i did get waxed around 38 weeks.  I had no problem what so ever.  You are a little more sensitive, but if you go to a person you have been seeing for a while, they should be good to understand your body and get it down quickly!  Good luck

  • I personally haven't waxed or shaved since being pregnant because I am on blood thinners but I have been using a trimmer and at 31 weeks it is difficult. I have to use sensitive nair on my legs. Have you though about nair down there? Not the regular leg kind but I have seen a special bikini formula at ulta and have been thinking of trying it myself. It says it won't irritate your lady parts! And as a nurse I can personally tell everyone that about 1 hour after seeing seeing a hairy crotch, we can't even remember which one belongs to which patient lol. Its all about what makes you most comfortable so do what you need as long as the doc gives you the green flag!

I've tried Veet over the last week, and I'm really happy with it. No, it's not completely gone, but it's enough to where I'm not self conscious about it, which is what my problem would be. LOL No irritation whatsoever, and it was way easier than some other products I tried first.
