I have always had digestive issues and constipation but pregnancy has made it very severe. I have bad gas that causes severe stomach pains and am so constipated that I will go up to 2 weeks without a bowel movement and when I do go, very little ever passes. I take colace daily but it hasn't helped at all. My stomach always feels full and uncomfortable but I do not even have the urge to have a bowel movement for weeks at a time. When I do go, it is often hard to and I feel like I am not able to finish.
Today I felt the need to use the bathroom and was able to actually have a bowel movement without any straining or pain. Not a lot of stool was passed, but what was covered in blood. The blood was bright red. It was not a lot but it was definitely noticeable. I want to call my doctor but because it is a weekend I didn't know if it was serious enough to call the emergency line they have set up.
Any idea what this could be? Any advice? Do you think this is a big enough deal to call my doctor or can it wait until Monday?
Re: Yucky post but need advice
I could have written this post myself - I'm in the same situation! I've suffered from extreme constipation my whole life and adding pregnancy into the picture - ugh the constipation is the WORST! My whole digestive system has slowed down even more! I even experience the blood in my stool earlier this week (Tuesday I think) after minimal relief. However, it hasn't happened again so I haven't called the Dr. I'm almost certain that it's hemorrhoids. If it happens again I will call the Dr - and I'll bring it up at my next appointment.
Things that help with my constipation - my Dr has OK'd Metamucil which helps. I drink it in the morning with some OJ. Also, she said when it gets extremely bad, I can take Miralax (I just shouldn't use it all the time). I also pop stool softners like candy and eat a TON of fiber! The Fiber Plus cereal and cereal bars work wonders. Also - I've added Activia to my lunch routine.
Hope you get some relief soon!
What would make me talk to the doctor would eliminating only every other week. That can't be good, your body holding all those toxins in for so long. The bleeding added onto it and I would definitely be calling them. Good luck!
This is me for the most part all well. I would definitely speak to your doctor about only eliminating every other week. Something else to keep in mind that my gastroenterologist told me was that if you increase your fiber, you need to increase your water intake as well, otherwise the increased fiber can have the opposite intended affect and cause more constipation. I hope you are able to some relief soon! I know how you feel.
DD #2 - 03.13
I have an anal fissure that causes blood like that, so I would say its either that or a hemorrhoid.
definitely talk to your doc. There is no need to be that miserable. After suffering through the first trimester with my fissure ( I've had it for 5 months now) my doc has now ok'd Miralax for me to take again. It works awesome. If you can get relief with upping soluble and insoluble fiber (it matters to get both and not just a bunch of one kind), drinking tons of water, using Metamucil or Citrucel, or stool softeners, that would be awesome. Good luck!!
