Yucky post but need advice

I have always had digestive issues and constipation but pregnancy has made it very severe. I have bad gas that causes severe stomach pains and am so constipated that I will go up to 2 weeks without a bowel movement and when I do go, very little ever passes. I take colace daily but it hasn't helped at all. My stomach always feels full and uncomfortable but I do not even have the urge to have a bowel movement for weeks at a time. When I do go, it is often hard to and I feel like I am not able to finish.

Today I felt the need to use the bathroom and was able to actually have a bowel movement without any straining or pain. Not a lot of stool was passed, but what was covered in blood. The blood was bright red. It was not a lot but it was definitely noticeable. I want to call my doctor but because it is a weekend I didn't know if it was serious enough to call the emergency line they have set up.

Any idea what this could be? Any advice? Do you think this is a big enough deal to call my doctor or can it wait until Monday?

  • sounds like hemorrhoids...try using witch hazel wipes it will help with irritation unless they are internal. I think if does that every time you go to the bathroom the i would say yea go get seen. But if it stops after you go or isnt alot i think you should be fine till monday. Then your doc can give you something to help.

  • I was thinking it might be internal hemmorhoids. Thanks!

  • I dunno, I would err on the side of caution. If it happens a second time, call your doc, office hours or no. Dark blood in stool is never a good thing. Even if it is just hemmoroids, you shouldn't have to live with it being that bad, and the doc should have you on something that is the strongest you can get without harming the baby. You also want to make sure the blockage doesn't reach a point where you require surgery (that can happen). I'm no medical professional, but that's my 2 cents. Please be careful and let us know if you're able to get some relief.

  • I could have written this post myself - I'm in the same situation!  I've suffered from extreme constipation my whole life and adding pregnancy into the picture - ugh the constipation is the WORST!  My whole digestive system has slowed down even more!  I even experience the blood in my stool earlier this week (Tuesday I think) after minimal relief.  However, it hasn't happened again so I haven't called the Dr.  I'm almost certain that it's hemorrhoids.  If it happens again I will call the Dr - and I'll bring it up at my next appointment.

Things that help with my constipation - my Dr has OK'd Metamucil which helps.  I drink it in the morning with some OJ.  Also, she said when it gets extremely bad, I can take Miralax (I just shouldn't use it all the time).  I also pop stool softners like candy and eat a TON of fiber!  The Fiber Plus cereal and cereal bars work wonders.  Also - I've added Activia to my lunch routine.

Hope you get some relief soon!

  • I'm not really in the same boat but I've had minor issues now and In the past. I find that the Kashi cereals honey Almond Crunch is one of my favorites really helps keep things moving. Also OJ too!? Not sure why but it does.

  • What would make me talk to the doctor would eliminating only every other week. That can't be good, your body holding all those toxins in for so long. The bleeding added onto it and I would definitely be calling them. Good luck!

  • I would also see if you can find a vitamin supplement WITHOUT iron until your issue resolves.  For what it is worth, I've found flax seed meal to be really helpful.  It has omega 3s in it which is a bonus and your body absolutely can not digest the hulls of the seeds so it is a really good fiber source.

This is me for the most part all well.  I would definitely speak to your doctor about only eliminating every other week.  Something else to keep in mind that my gastroenterologist told me was that if you increase your fiber, you need to increase your water intake as well, otherwise the increased fiber can have the opposite intended affect and cause more constipation.  I hope you are able to some relief soon!  I know how you feel.

  • The only advice I have is to try miralax.  It is amazing stuff- very gentle and not gas forming.  It does take a couple days to work, but it can really make life easier!

  • Have you tried prunes or prune juice? Ditto PP you must increase your water intake or the fiber can't work.
  • I have an anal fissure that causes blood like that, so I would say its either that or a hemorrhoid.

definitely talk to your doc. There is no need to be that miserable. After suffering through the first trimester with my fissure ( I've had it for 5 months now) my doc has now ok'd Miralax for me to take again. It works awesome. If you can get relief with upping soluble and insoluble fiber (it matters to get both and not just a bunch of one kind), drinking tons of water, using Metamucil or Citrucel, or stool softeners, that would be awesome. Good luck!!

  • Definitely use the Miralax.  It is completely inert, does not cross the bowel wall, and is eliminated with the stool.  If used properly, it is very effective for regulating bowel movements  (and safe in pregnancy).
  • Thanks so much for the advice! There is not really much pain, so I don't know if it is a fissure, because you all said that was painful. I have taken Miralax for years for constipation but was told not to by my doctor and to try colace instead. I think I will call and beg for her to allow me.... I can't take much more!! So glad to know I a not the only one with these yucky issues!
